Sunrise to Sunset Challenge - 27th December 2009
Although we were unable to start at sunrise this was once again a great event. At 8:00 the course was largely covered with ice - but thanks to Denzil, Gavin, Matt and especially to Gerard and Bryan (the partners of two of the none WRR runners) who all worked hard to clear as much ice as possible the race started an hour late - with Gerard and Bryan continuing for several hours after the start to clear ice. On behalf of all the runners thank you Gerard and Bryan.
The race comprises of an undulating largely off road 0.8 mile loop around which competitors run as many times as they can or want to before sunset at 4:01 pm. Twenty runners took part in the event taking care with a very icy flat section half way around the course, there were several falls but no one was seriously hurt. Both the distance and course marathon time records were smashed, with Robbie Vbritton completing 39 miles in 6 hours 47 minutes and Lisa Barry completing a marathon on 3 hours 56 minutes. Full results can be seen by clicking here. Photographs taken by Clare Aston will be posted on the club Flickr site.
After the race many of the competitors enjoyed a drink (or two) and bite to eat.
Many thanks to all who helped make this event possible including John Ling and Matt Johnson who counted laps and looked after the drinks station and especially to Denzil and Lucy Martin for their hospitality and organising the race.

Chirstmas Eve Escapade - 24th December 2009
What better way can there be to spend Christmas Eve than by taking on a run through the Shropshire / Staffordshire countryside whilst trying to follow a map? Newport Running Club put on the event centred around the village of Moreton near Newport. Ian Emery took on the 5K route whilst Kathy Ling and Jon Aston did the 8K course. After the event we enjoyed soup and mince pies in the community centre and all for a £3 entry fee - great value.
Turkey Trot - 20th December 2009
With both the Stansted Stagger and Telford 10K cancelled because of the weather the Turkey Trot in Wolverhampton seems to be the only race at which the club was represented today. (If you know different let me know). The icy conditions made the going hard for the two club members who competed in this five mile event.

Moreton Morrell Christmas Cracker - 13th December 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
This 10k m/t race was held at Warwickshire Collage Centre. You Name it this race had it, blue skies, sunshine and rainbows. Before the start we were informed that we would be running through horse water jumps, we thought he was joking!!!!
The race was 2 laps with steep hills very boggy fields and very muddy woods. On my first lap i was going down the wrong lane, one of the marshalls ask me where did i think i was going, i had to back track 3/4 of a mile, I managed to catch some runners up just before the second lap, and had to leave them behind because i was warmed up so in the end i managed to do 7.4miles. later found out that 4 runners had dropped out I was not last and felt good.
At the prizes giving male over 60 was awarded but not female as it stated on the entry form. I made enquires, the chairlady was quite sure that no female o/60 had entered. I was asked if i was over 60 I said just about I am only 66, everybody was in a uproar and it caused a big laugh I picked a cash prize and a nice xmas pudd I loved the race and would do it again.

Benidorm 10K- 29th November 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
It was a great feeling running the Benidorm 10k on 29th November. This was the first time the event had been held and is to be a yearly event.
I really enjoyed the 10K running through the old part of the city and along the sea front in warm sunshine. I think everybody had turned out. The atmosphere was fantastic, everyone was cheering us on.
Before the race we had our photographs taken and I made sure our club flag was on show, everyone thought the flag is a great idea.
3,000 runners took part including the half marathon, When we were waiting for the gun we had a surprise, it was fireworks. I was so taken with them it was 2 minutes before I got started. The race was very well organised and we had a great goodie bag. I think my time was 72 minutes.

Gatliff Marathon 50K - 29th November 2009
Report by Jon Aston
This event had everything except good running conditions. After driving the best part of 4 hours to get to the town of Edenbridge in Kent Sarah and I set off at 8:00 am, within the first hour we experienced heavy rain, thunder, lightning and hail. Conditions underfoot were not great with about 80% of the route being mud, we had to cross several streams by wading through them. The route took us through rural Kent into East Sussex and Surrey, we past picturesque villages and numerous oast houses. We finished in the dark and having forgotten to take my head torch were grateful to a group of walkers with torches who guided us back. We finished in 9 hours 15 minutes which doesn’t sound quite so bad considering that sub 3 hour marathon runners were taking 6 and half hours.
Burntwood Duathlon - 22nd November 2009

Kathy finished fifth in her age category.

Breakfast Run - 1st November 2009
Kathy and John Ling hosted the clubs third breakfast run at their home in Broseley, a dozen club members turned up to run a fantastic 4.5 mile route devised by Kathy. The route was marshalled by John, Ian and some of Kathy’s friends. After the run the runners were treated to a full breakfast cooked by Kathy, Jan and Yvonnne, runners were charged a modest fee for their breakfast with profits being donated to MacMillan cancer care - Kathy tells me that £120 was raised. On behalf the runners I would like to thank Kathy and John for their hospitality, to all the marshalls for showing us the way and to Kathy, Jan and Yvonne for the splendid breakfast.

The mass race was started in waves from 10:00 and saw runners take in many of Birmingham's landmarks as the course took them to Bournville and Edgbaston. The light rain made for perfect running conditions. Pictures by Clare Aston on the Flickr website can be seen by clicking here

Cotswold Challenge - 26th September 2009
Sarah and Jon Aston traveled to the Cotswold’s to take on this tough 26.5 mile event. Starting from the village of Birdlip and following a circular route past Stroud and Painswick the course was nearly all off road with some difficult terrain and very hilly. There was virtually no flat sections at all, like the Malvern Midsummer marathon the pair completed in June this event included just over 4,000 feet of ascent (440 feet more than Snowdon). However stunning scenery and stopping for a few minutes to watch a deer made the event memorable. As with all these events each checkpoint supplied cakes and biscuits and a meal was provided at the end - not bad for £5.

Race The Train- 15th August 2009
Report by Clare Aston
Leaving the house at 6.30am in the holidays is not fun and as we were driving to Wales it looked like the weather was going to be against us. We got to Tywyn and dropped Kathy off so that she could get her bus and go to the start of her 10K race. We then walked into the town and had breakfast in an extremely tacky cafe. Being the child I am, I decided that a walk down to the beach would be good but almost got blown away by the wind so immediately turned round. We then wandered back to the finish in time to see Kathy cross the finish line.
Amazingly the sky cleared in time for the 14 mile race. We got on the train at Tywyn and it proved very difficult to take photos of moving people whilst on a moving train, lots of pictures of trees. It was really fun as we went past people and they were all waving. We reached the half way station where we all got off and the train turned around to go back the other day. Denzil’s Mom very kindly bought me a magnum = ).
We reached Tywyn again and headed towards the finish to see people cross the line. It was a very long but really fun day and hopefully I’ll be able to go again next year.
Pictures will be uploaded to the flickr website soon.

This race was just fantastic. The first hill was 600 ft high, across fields, over stiles then up another hill. The views were awesome . It finished in the high street of Montgomery and there were nice refreshments in the Pub the Dragon. I was lucky to win the over 65 series and was given a nice plaque. I would love to do the series again.
This was Kathys 80th race of her 65th year and her third race of the week!

Enville 10k - Sunday 26th July 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
There were very few of us , the weather stayed dry for us but quite cool, we had to attack the big hill twice, across high fields, I had a quite discussion with the young cattle. However I felt more marshals were needed and could feel the lack of enthusiasm from the young marshalls (mobiles) which made me feel I was a nuisance, but in spite of all this I enjoyed the run my time I think was 1h 44m I don't know who won it because most people had gone home when i finish.
this was my 75th race
Tough Guy Nettle Warrior - 26th July 2009
Well done to Jason Harland and Denzil Martin who competed in this tough event. Denzil finished in 2:41:54 which was quicker than his time on a shorter course last year.
165th Potteries Hash - 25th July 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
This took place at Wetley Moor in Staffordshire, a 4.5 mile run in one of the wettest places.
The sun came out making it lovely and warm. We had great fun getting lost and finding the right route back to base. we also enjoyed the deep bog and mud.and ending the day with excellent chip butties.

Trentham 10 Miler - 19th July 2009
Report by Steve Gill
Well the course said Hilly and they were right. It was a 2 lap course starting from a village called Tittensor. Now lap courses are not my favourite because you know whats coming around the second or third time around. With this course it was made even worse when between the first mile or two you had a very long run up a hill (approx 1/2 mile long) although felt like double that.Ok first time around and even passed some people. Over the rest of the lap it was also undulating.
Now come the second time up the hill it was even b-----y harder. Just crawled over the top and then took 5 minutes to get into rhythm again .Managed to get to the end (finish was another hill) and had a touch of Jelly legs when I got there.
Would I do it again??? NO was the answer straight after the race and it still remains a NO now. Goody bag none existant - Got a T-Shirt but that was it.
Came 123rd out of 256 in a time of 1.16.
Race for Life (Do One Get One Free), Shrewsbury - 19th July 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
I went to west midland show ground at Shrewsbury to do the race for life, there was a big problem
with the traffic I got in the ground at 10 56 only to find it had been delayed for 30 minutes I met Sara Rogers with her two daughters, we did the 5k together we got a good goodie bag and there was a good atmosphere. Then the trouble started. it was chock a block nobody could move because of the incoming traffic so I enjoyed my picnic read a little by this time it was 1 45 pm so I stayed a little longer and did the race in the afternoon and got another goodie bag.
Chasewater Challenge 10k - 19th July 2009
Report by Ross Weston (copied from his from Facebook page)
Struggled at the Chasewater 10K. Early promise gave way to mid race Cardiovascular Collapse. Three quarters of the way round I experienced a near death experience, where the whole of my life flashed before my eyes. There wasn't that much interesting stuff to be honest. And near fatal Heart Prolapse on the finishing line where my lungs exited my body and made a break for the car. Thankfully they dropped the keys.

Fairlands Valley Challenge Marathon- 19th July 2009
Report by Clare Aston
Jon and Sarah Aston swapped from their walking boots (of last weekend) back to their running shoes. This event organised by the Fairlands Valley Spartans of Stevenage saw a couple of hundred runners and walkers take on the 26.2 mile course. “The Marathon was really well organised’ says Jon Aston ‘ with refreshment stations every four miles stocked with water, squash, biscuits and bread pudding’ The route was multi-terrain with a mixture of road, paths, tracks and trails. They also went through a very muddy field. One of Jon’s highlights of the day was meeting Martin Bulger who is the author of ‘ Living makes you run longer’. “ There was lots of bread pudding and there was a free barbeque at the end” says Sarah Aston. Also they didn’t get lost!!

Report by Paul Williams
I ran in the above which started from Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton on Sunday 12th July. The course was off road along the disused railway path and surrounding fields. Conditions were very wet and slippery underfoot which made it a tough but nevertheless enjoyable race. I finished 15th in 41.55.

Ludlow Challenge - 11th July 2009
Sarah and Jon Aston participated in the 30 mile Ludlow Challenge 30 mile walk. Wearing walking boots instead of running shoes did not suit with the couple who found it hard going spending nearly 10 hours on their feet. As with all these events the cakes and food at the checkpoints and the Hobson beer at the finish made it worthwhile.

Baggeridge 5K- 9th July 2009
Report by Kathy Ling
I was late with just 1 minute to go i had to run down a hill to start with. Brian Smith was giving me some stick as i got to the start the horn went so I had to turn around and run back up the hill so I had to get my little feet going
I was then informed that this was the suicide 6 course it was hill after hill my friend Enid was very unhappy with the course and wanted to drop out;; well as we are in the middle of a wood , i manage to persuade her that this was not a good idea. We ended up in a farm yard. however the farmer with his muck spreader, came towards us and told us where to go. I thought this was funny I enjoyed it and would do it again. We got a nice tee shirt

Shifnal Steeplechase Half Marathon - 5th July 2009
Once again the sixth form students of the Idsal School in Shifnal put on a great half marathon. A record club turn out for this race saw 14 wreckers take on the rural course, including four who did the Birmingham and Black Country Half the previous day. It was quite warm early on but the plentiful water stations (take note Edinburgh) and one kind resident who set up his sprinkler to spray water over the road helped keep runners cool. The Chevy Chase - 4th July 2009
Report by Linda Edmondson
After quite a bit of agonising, I decided to honour my pre-entry to the Chevy Chase – which is a 20 mile/4000 ft fell race in the Cheviot hills of Northumberland. Due to my injuries I hadn’t trained anything like enough for it and I wasn’t sure how I’d cope – however, I decided I could always join up with the walkers – and dropping out wouldn’t be as bad as not starting. So……on a sunny day I had a great time on the uphills and really enjoyed the views…..but I found the downhills really hard (something is still not right in my lower back) and I found it too hot later in the day. However, a kind bit of cloud cooled me down for the last 2 miles and I managed to get round in 5 hours 40:48 and have a last burst of speed to beat a lad in shocking pink tights who thought he’d try and get me on the line (hah!) – so it’s back to the physio and sticking to flatter races for a bit.
Birmingham and Black Country Half Marathon - 4th July 2009
Much improved was the verdict of the four Wrekin Road Runners who had completed this event last year. Mile markers were guarded by two marshals to prevent kids throwing them into the canal. Six water stations along the route were provided from canal narrow boats, an improved finish, better goodie bag and medal all made the event much better, A few hours drinking in the Piano and Pitcher rounded up a good event. Pictures can be seen on the Flickr site by clicking here.

Forest Park Ladies 5K, Warrington - 1st July 2009
Report by Linda Edmondson
I donned the wrecker vest again (first time in 8 weeks) yesterday at the Forest Park Ladies 5K. It was hot and humid in Warrington as well as Ironbridge – however, it was just about OK for a 5K. Despite feeling a lack of fitness I was pleased with my time of 26.12 ish. Most importantly I didn’t fall over and the elbow and back felt alright today.
Ironbridge 4 (Sexarathon race 4) - 1st July 2009
Although not quite as muddy as the last couple of years this race provided its usual helping of mud and puddles. Jon Aston got sworn at for splashing a fellow competitor as he ran straight through the middle of one of the deeper puddles. Conditions were less than ideal for running with the evening very warm, still, humid and airless. Despite the conditions 37 Wrekin Road Runners took part with Paul Ward winning the race and Sadie Shepherd finishing second woman. Pictures taken by Clare Aston (official club photographer, with the jacket to prove it) can be seen on the Flickr website.

Cpm Thame 10k
Report by Steve Gill
I decided to take on a run at the weekend when visiting my Parents in Oxfordshire. It started and finished at my old secondary school in Thame,Oxon.
The weather was a bit warm ( in the early twenties ) and this was with a start at 9.30am.Early start due to road closures.Talking to people the course was supposed to be quite flat with a downhill start and uphill finish. They were about right but the uphill finish ( including slight inclines ) started about 3k from the finish.
At 7k out it started to be hard work.Still finished with a respectable time of 46.15. I finished 175 out of 920.
Wombourne Midweek 5K
Although it took her a while to get going Kathy completed this race to record race 64 of her 65 in her 65th year challenge. Cameron Stamp also took part doing in Kathy’s word ‘doing his speedy stuff’ results will be posted when available.

The Holly Marathon and Half Marathon – 21st June 2009
The day started early when Sarah & Jon Aston arrived to start running their second marathon in two days at 8:00. Race director Denzil Martin, his wife Lucy, daughter Holly (after whom the event is named) and club photographer Clare Aston were present to witness the start. Sarah & Jon completed about 12 miles by the time the half marathon was started and another 22 runners began their run around the 0.8 mile loop. Although not the easiest of courses with uneven tracks and a few gentle climbs, the laps took participants past the race HQ at the Martin’s residence every mile where head marshal John Ling ably assisted by Clare Aston did a fantastic job counting laps, runners were also provided with plentiful supplies of water, energy drinks, jelly babies, Mars bars and in the last few laps Pims.
The half marathon was won by Tony Nicholls, with Richie Watts finishing second and Paul Williams third. Several runners completed their first half marathon – congratulations go to them all. Another notable achievement was accomplished by Kathy Ling who completed the half marathon which was her second event of the day. Only hours before the start she took part in the Severn Hospice 10 mile Midnight Walk.
Jon and Sarah finished the marathon in joint first place (and last) to set a new course record of 5:43:27. Jon says he is going to enjoy holding this record for the next six months as he is sure it will fall at the Sunrise to Sunset challenge in December.
After finishing each runner received a fantastic medal a brownie and a Mars bar.
The end of the race heralded the start of a wonderful afternoon and evening of good company, good food, a dip in the hot tub and the odd alcoholic beverage (or two). Club member Matt Johnson and his friend Mac provided musical entertain with two sets of songs .
Thanks Denzil and Lucy. Pictures of the race and party will be available on Flickr very soon.

Kathy Ling and Jan Pugh took part in this event that started in the Town Park at midnight.
Malvern Midsummer Marathon - 20th June 2009
Sarah & Jon completed what they both say is the toughest marathon that they have completed to date. The marathon started with a mile and half of steep uphill onto the Worcestershire Beacon, then up North Hill before descending into the Herefordshire countryside, with a few smaller hills and lots of rough fields to cross where they came across a lamb with a bucket stuck on its head which they managed to rescue. The last 7 miles were really hard with steep ascents over 7 hills. The total ascent of the race was 1450 meters which is 106 meters more than the height of Ben Nevis and just over three and half times higher than the Wrekin - and all that in a marathon. Jon and Sarah finished in 7:32:00 To see pictures click here.
Blakedown Bolt - 19th June 2009
Kathy Ling really enjoyed the Blakedown Bolt 10K. She reports plenty of hills amd a nice stream to run through. She also reports that the goody bag was pretty good. Well done Kathy!
Shugborough Relays - 17th June 2009
The club entered 11 teams in this years event, as always a great atmosphere and hundreds of runners made for a fun evening, it was especially good to see so many junior members take part. Paul Ward achieved the fastest leg of the evening completing his two miles in 9 minutes 57 seconds.

Caen Trip - 13/14 June 2009
Several club members made the annual trip to Caen in Normandy France for the running festival in commemoration of the D-Day landings. This was the club’s 9th successive year and true to form maintained it’s impressive record of success. Mark Dalkins took 3rd place in the 10k race out of a field of 3,200 runners and only an injury picked up during the race kept him from taking 2nd place.he finished in 32:08.
In the ladies 5k La Rochambelle on Saturday evening Sue Baker and Margaret Dalkins finished well up in a field of over 6000.
A total of 16,250 runners participated in either the 5k,10k,half and full marathon.
Unfortunately Ian, Paul and Ken forgot to take medical certificates and couldn’t enter the race (well not officially) - now you would think that after 9 years they would have learnt what to do.

Cheltenham Circular Marathon - 14th June 2009
Sarah and Jon Aston completed the Cheltenham Circular marathon today. The event started and finished at Cheltenham race course and went in a clockwise direction all the way round the outside of the town mainly on footpaths and tracks. There was plenty of water, (take note Edinburgh marathon organisers), plenty of hills, plenty of hot sunshine, and plenty of stiles (at least 67). We even stopped for lunch of cheese rolls and tea made by the WI at the half way point. Click here for pictures

Auld Wrekin (Edinburgh Marathon & Relay) - 31st May 2009
Report by Jon Aston
Glorious weather greeted and stayed us for our weekend in Edinburgh. Twelve club members & supporters enjoyed staying at Leith Docks in apartments with fantastic views overlooking the Firth of Forth, with another four members staying at hotels in the city or with friends. Highlights for several of the group included tours of the Royal Yacht Britannia, which we could see from the balcony of our apartments and Edinburgh Castle. The day of the marathon proved to be a hot one, with several water stations running out of water, it was not the best organised race but we all got round. The Hairy Haggis relay team did especially well. Even though it was far from my favourite race the memories of the weekend, the weather, the view from the apartment and most of all time spent with friends made it a memorable weekend. Special congratulations to Helen Smith on completing her first marathon.
Pictures will appear on the Flickr website soon.

The Bayley Mile - 20th May 2009
Tony Nicholls and Kathy Ling took part in the seniors ‘open’ race at the 13th running of the Bayley mile in Wellington. Tony finished in fifth place but said he held back as he didn’t have time to saty for the prize giving. ‘That’s a good one I might use it myself’. Kathy was second lady. Earlier Chloe Murphy won the under 15 girls mile. Click here to see pictures.

Brathay Windermere Marathon - 17th May 2009
The best description for this course is very undulating, but it must be one of the most scenic road marathons in the UK with picturesque views across Lake Windermere and the Lake District mountains most of the way around the route which starts near Ambleside. The route goes anti-clockwise all the way round the lake. Club member Jon Aston took on this race as part of the ‘District Double’ a marathon in the Peak District and then another in the Lake District on consecutive days. Although this was Jon’s 32nd marathon and 9th of 2009 he has never run them on consecutive days before, he took it very steadily feeling the previous days run still in legs and finished in 5:14:50, to complete a total of 52.4 miles in 10 hours. 8 minutes and 11 seconds all within a 36 hour period.

White Peak Marathon - 16th May 2009
Sarah & Jon Aston returned to their favourite marathon to run the 26.2 mile route along the Tissington and High Peak trails to Cromford in the Peak District. The contrast with the last marathon they ran (London) couldn’t be greater, just 200 competitors, spectacular scenery, a handful of spectators and a peacefulness that you can only really attain on rural runs. The event was really well organised, with plenty of water stations and friendly encouraging marshalls. The weather tried its best to spoil the run (but failed) with periods of heavy rain and wind, but at other times the sun shone and it was too warm.
Sarah had a great run to finish her second fastest marathon.

Muller 10K, Market Drayton - 10th May 2009
The sixth running of this event saw it grow in size again, this year’s race attracted 1200 entries. However the organisation get better each year. Just before the race began the sun came out and made warm conditions for the race, which took runners from the start through the centre of Market Drayton out to the half way point at the Muller factory and then back. As has been the norm in the recent running's of this race the people of the town came out to support the runners. Ruth Finney came up with a great way to both get a sub 50 minute finish and beat her partner Adam James - she wore his number. Nice one Ruth I will try this with Sarah next time we run in the same race. Exmoor Coastal Half Marathon - 9th May 2009
Report by Ross Weston
"Not one for the faint hearted, the hills start from the off and kept going for almost the first 4.3 miles (Checkpoint No 1). Then the route wound back to the start for more of the same. Even walking up the hills I was reduced to a Red sweaty version of Thomas the Tank Engine - Slow and puffing. That said the whole thing was very well organised with a 10K, Half and Full Marathon operating from the same Race H.Q. One of 7 events run by Endurance Life, and whilst not cheap certainly represent a challenge.
Now I know I'm not one of the quickest at the club, but to finish an hour outside my PB in 3:24 gives some idea of the difficulty" See some great pictures from this event by clicking here
Sheinton Steeplechase - 6th May 2009
Is this is the perfect race? Beautiful countryside, starting from a picturesque Shropshire village, a multi-terrain 3 and a bit mile course, along quiet country lanes, over fields and through woodland carpeted with wild garlic, throw in stunning views and good weather conditions. Could it be any better - well yes when the Vicar serves you a glass of beer in the church at the prize giving after the race. This year the race had a twist - each runner had to estimate their finishing time and run without a watch, with prizes given to those finishing closest to their predicted time. Eight club members took part with Clare Aston coming first in her age category and Kathy Ling second in hers.
See a photo of some of the club finishers by clicking here Jon Aston is very worried about his apparent lack of hair in this picture.
Jason Harland 22:08 (52 seconds faster than he predicted)
Tony Nicholls 22:20 (39 seconds faster than predicted)

Coniston Fell Race - 2nd May 2009
Report from Linda Edmondson
Had a great run completing this (9 mile race) in 2.14.54 in perfect conditions. The next day I fell of a tiny crag whilst fell walking in Wasdale – resulting in dislocated elbow, a lot of bruises, mountain rescue and a night in hospital…so last race for a bit…..
Flora London Marathon - 26th April 2009
For most of last week the weather forecast for marathon morning was rain, cloud and maximum temperatures of 16 degrees Celsius perfect marathon running conditions - but on the morning of 26th April we awoke to clear blue skies and a sun already giving out heat at 08:30. The temperature gradually climbed to 20 degrees during the course of day, less than ideal conditions. The sunshine however brought out crowds of supporters who made so much noise that at times it actually felt a bit overwhelming. The event as always was really well supported and organised with the traditional route taking us from Greenwich over Tower Bridge through the Isle of Dogs, past Canary Wharf to the embankment past Parliament, Buckingham Palace to the finish in the Mall. Denzil Martin was the first club member to finish, he was pleased to get in just under 4 hours and to have beaten Gordon Ramsay. Sue Lloyd was the first of the two club ladies to finish completing her second marathon in a great time. Marek Kaminski put in great performance to finish his second marathon in three weeks having achieved an fantastic 3:38:54 in Paris on April 5th. Matt Johnson did really well to finish his first marathon given the knee trouble he experienced. Sarah Aston finished her 13th marathon (the 5th of 2009) and was pleased to have once again beaten her husband, she was however less than pleased with the quality and size of the T-shirt. Jon Aston finished to complete his 30th marathon (7th of 2009 and 21st in the last 12 month).

Beinn Ratha Hill Race - 25th April 2009
Linda Edmondson competed in this 12K race which included 240 metres of climb. She has sent in the following report.
We had a cloudy day at Beinn Ratha (near Thurso overlooking Dounreay) and 34 runners turned out (a bit smaller than FLM but we understand a good number for this race). It was a bit boggy in places and the legs a bit tired on the climbs (a bit of Manx lactic remaining). However, I got round in 77.38 and was 4th lady home and even got a paperweight for being 2nd lady vet. The tea and refreshments after the race were first class and it was a very sociable do.
Wrekin Streak Fell Race - 22nd April 2009

A foggy morning greeted the seven club members who took part in the Wombourne 10 miler and 5K this morning. The 10 mile race started at 09:30 with runners being set off individually at 15 second intervals. The route took us out and back along the disused Kingswinford to Wolverhampton railway track bed. Manx Mountain Marathon, Isle of Man - 11th April 2009
A massive CONGRATULATIONS to Linda Edmondson who took part and finished the manx mountain marathon. The Manx Mountain Marathon traverses the backbone of fells from the north to the south of the Isle of Man. A distance of 31 miles, it ascents a total of 8,000 feet. The geology of the Island is similar to that of the mountainous regions of Cumbria and North Wales, with the terrain usually heather and grass moorland, with occasional wet and boggy areas covering the watersheds. The hills are susceptible to thick mist, extreme wind and icy conditions, however, on a clear still day the scenery and solitude is incomparable. The route encompasses open fell, flagged sections through private land, greenway routes and well used tracks, with minimal road sections. The race is said to be one of athletics ultimate challenges covering 31.5 miles of difficult, rugged terrain as it visits 11 of the Isle of Mans major peaks.
Linda reports that the weather was good for the event, bright, sunny and clear but not too hot, although a bit wet underfoot. Pictures can be seen by clicking here

Taunton Marathon - 5th April 2009
Not quite as romantic as Paris, but with local accent and dialect as hard to interpret Jon Aston took part in Taunton Marathon. Sunshine and unseasonable warmth greeted the runners lining up at the 10:30 start. The course which would best be described as undulating tested participants as they ran through the city centre and then out into the countryside of Somerset (cider country) before doing it all again on the second loop.

The Sandstone 10K - 5th April 2009
Well done to Jan Pugh and Kathy Ling who completed this event. The following race report was sent in by Kathy.
The weather was perfect at the Sandstone 10K multi terrain. I was proud of Jan who was taking part in her first 10K. We went up some very steep hills, through lovely woods, over freshly ploughed fields (note from web editor - bet the farmers loved that) and through private land. The views were fantastic but there were hundreds of high stiles to climb over, but not for my little legs. The marshals were very pleasant and the event well organised. All in all a very enjoyable run and I would do it again.

Charnwood Marathon - 28th March 2009
How else would Sarah and Jon Aston celebrate their wedding anniversary? Run a marathon of course. Today saw the couple travel to Quorn in Leicestershire for the Charnwood Marathon. After starting in the chill of the morning the run followed roads, tracks and trails through the Leicestershire countryside. The event organised by the LDWA required runners and walkers to navigate their own way between a series of check points, some were unmanned and required competitors to clip their entry cards whilst others had marshals who recorded progress. Each of the staffed checkpoints offered competitors cakes and drinks with hot drinks and sandwiches being available at the half way point. The route took competitors up and down several of the highest hills in Leicestershire that afforded fantastic views but exposure to blustery weather.

Lisbon Mini-Marathon - 22nd March 2009
Kathy Ling, Jan Pugh and Kathy’s daughter Heather took part in the Lisbon mini-marathon. Kathy has sent in the following report.
“We had lovely warm weather, 30,000 of us running along the motorway then on to the 3.¾ mile long bridge, with trains running underneath. There was a wonderful atmosphere, the mini-marathon is to encourage anyone to run no matter what their capability was.
The race started at 10 am, but at 9.30am i and many thousands others were waiting patiently to get on the motorway to the srarting line the time now was 11.5am. I found a marshal who could speak English, to ask where and when the starting line was. He informed me that I could start when I like because there was no time clock or chip, the main objective was for everyone to archive the mini marathon. the motorway and roads had been closed till 2 p.m. "Off you go and good luck" I was taken aback by all this.
Because of the volume of people, I could not get my self in to a steady rhythm, but this did not stop from enjoying the event at the end of the race, we were given 2 goodie bags a great Tee Shirt and medal and some very nice ice cream.”

We were informed it was all downhill [WRONG] we were running over high flyovers with very strong winds, the police were great but the marshalling very poor, yes usual thing I and a few more went down the wrong road. Even the winner complained. I knew I was running out of time for the 3 hour cut off. However two fellow runners came and met me and talked me through to the finish. 2:59:18S with 32 seconds to spare I got my medal, runners who finished behind behind me would not get a medal. I would do it again.

Draycote Water Ultra Marathon - 22nd February 2009
Jon Aston completed his longest ever race of 35 miles at Draycote Water today. The race was 7 and a bit times around the reservoir. A full marathon is hard enough but adding another 9 miles on top is really tough, the wind at times was ripping over the reservoir making it feel a bit cold at times. Although not one of fastest competitors (by a ver very long way) Jon was pleased however to have eclipsed his time for his previous longest run the 30 mile Big Cat challenge which he completed in 6:55:00

The medal, soup and cheese rolls went down well, the highlight its self was the wind blowing the marquee off from the soup dragon ladies, many hands came to the rescue, and a good laugh all round. Well what a funny day i had on Saturday, i went to the Mud and Mayham 10k at the Wedgnock X. C. i manged to do the frist lap of deep mud, water up to the kneecaps steep hill,
just starting 2nd when somebody cough the back of my heel and yes i went down like a tone of bricks knocking my left knee, so muttering to my self i retire, because i wanted to run the Alsager 5m, how ever the recovery was quick.

Gloucester Marathon - 25th January 2009
Jon and Sarah Aston took part in the Gloucester marathon this morning. Despite predictions for wind and rain conditions were ideal, with the course much improved from last years inaugural event. After a figure of 8 through the streets of Quedgeley for the first 3 and bit miles the route took us out onto an undulating rural loop that we had to run round three times, before turning off the loop for the final 2K to the finish. Sarah finished to complete her 9th marathon and Jon his 24th.
Provisional Times
Sarah Aston 4:27:50
Jon Aston 4:47:50

I had a brilliant run of 12k at Tiddington. The start was a bit congested, never heard the horn but really enjoyed the whole 12k 7.5m, the weather was blue skies and plenty of sunshine also long and a ever lasting hills. A slate coaster made a nice memento. 24 down and 41 to go.

MacMillan Cancer Support January Jog (A.K.A. The Billy Doo Run) - 4th January 2009
Over 30 club members took part in either the 5K run or 2.5K fun run (or both) at Shukers Field in Newport. Wrekin Road Runners were encouraged to participate in this event to commemorate the life life of Pat Adams (Billy Doo) who lost a brave fight against cancer in December last year. Members travelled from all over to take part. It was apparently quite difficult to round everyone up for the group photograph before the run, but a great camaraderie and team spirit warmed the hearts of the runners on a very cold morning.
The 5K mens run was jointly won by Paul (Whizzo) Ward and Mark Dalkins in 16:25 and the women’s race by Sadie David in 20:59 with Chloe Murphy in second, a great and fitting result for Wrekin Road Runners. Highlights of the 2.5K fun run was Jon Aston and Tony Nicholls the first club members to finish being beaten by a five year girl they could not catch and Mr John Ling taking part his first (and he says last) run for the club. Full results for both race can be seen by clicking here.
After the run many club members retired to the Pheasant in Newport where we were entertained by beautiful singing of Emily Lloyd (as requested by Pat Adams) fed curry and enjoyed good company.
The only thing missing from the day was Pat. We feel sure that she would have approved and was smiling down upon us.
Pictures of the event and a great video of Tony and Paul dancing to Emily can be seen by clicking here

Vernon’s Limp Wrist 5 Mile Run - 1st January 2009
The new year was seen in by five club members who traveled to Stafford to take part in the Limp Wrist five mile run. The idea of this run is that runners predict their finishing time and complete the run without a watch (hence the name limp wrist), the winner being the runner who finishes nearest their predicted time.
The route took us from Castlefields out along a disused railway to Derrington and back. 115 runners took part on a very cold morning where the temperature didn’t rise above freezing. Times will be posted once available, although out of the five road runners who took part we think that Ian Emery finished closest to his predicted time and was the 10th closest in the whole race, Ross was the 15th closest to his time. Pictures from the race taken by Clare Aston can be seen by clicking here.
