Can there be a better way to spend a Sunday morning than running through beautiful Shropshire countryside? Eight Wrekin Road Runners did just that on Sunday 8th July by taking part in a field of 175 runners who took part in the Shifnal Steeplechase Half Marathon a race that followed a route between the churches of Shifnal, Ryton, Beckbury and Kemberton before returning to Shifnal. The race was organised sixth formers of the Idsall School in Shifnal, they did a great job to make this a friendly and well organised event. There were water stations every two miles which were welcome on a warm summers day. The course was mainly on roads but with some track sections through woodland and fields. The route contained some testing hills and included a couple of stiles to be climbed over in the mile and half. The results for the Wrekin Road Runners is shown below. The photo shows Jon Aston, Sarah Hodgson, Mark Evans, Pat Adams and Rachel Parker at the finish line, the faster members of the club having already left when we took the picture.
a very muddy road race. Most competitors resorted to swimming at more than one point but good times for many Wrekin Road Runners
Well done to Paul Ward who completed the Aldridge 10k on Sunday in a brilliant time of 32:53 to finish 4th overall and first in his category (vet 40

Blackpool Marathon & Half Marathon
Sunday 3rd June 2007 saw five club members brave the heat and several hungover stag and hen parties to brave the streets of Blackpool in the marathon and half marathon.
Taking part in the half marathon were Paul Muller who finished 6th with a time of 1:16:05, Sarah Aston 383rd in 1:55:21, Claire Admas 687th in 2:12:40 and Sara Rogers who finished 869th in 2:26:57.
Jon Aston provided the 'Loonie' club input by attempted the full marathon, which coming only seven weeks after the Paris marathon he described as being the 'hardest race I've ever run'. Jon finished in 326th place in a time of 4:31:14.
Despite Sundays torrential rain, 9 full teams of runners were to be seen huddling under a large marquee in the middle of a field at the bottom of the Wrekin. Now this by itself may seem a very odd thing (it certainly did to the runners) but it get stranger. not only were they in the middle of a field huddling under a marquee, they were preparing to run up one of Shropshire's land mark hills with a 9 gallon barrel weighing in excess of 100lB. The barrel race is split into four categories the classic category which carries a full barrel up to havens gate, the women's race which carries an empty barrel, the lunatic race where and individual carries a full barrel and the fun challenge were a team of four men/women/mixed carry an empty barrel. This years winners were yet again the Cock Hotel Hobson's Harriers retaining there title for a seventh year, with a staggering time of 23:20. Setting a new record for the women's race were the Flying Falcons with a time of 19:16. four teams with Wrekin Road Runners members took part. The Wrekin giants with a time of 30:01 and Amee and the beer bellies in 24:07.
Despite abysmal conditions for running, we still had a brilliant turn out for this rather damp rather muddy race. And, an even better turn out at mister Dave's after.
Congratulations to the 21 members who turned up to the Muller 10k on Sunday 13th may. Perfect running conditions left many runners with PB's and memories of a very enjoyable race. Thanks to Jon Aston for this brilliant montage of all Wrekin runners who took part.
Four Road Runners turned up to the first in the local fell race series. A challenging lung buster race straight up, round the trig point, and back. Taking part were Tony Nicholls: 20:41, Wendy Searle: 28:08, Tom Portman: 28:51 and making her debut into fell running Sarah Aston: 30:45.
A cracking turn out for the first race in the sexarathon series. our very own Paul Ward taking 3rd place.

Paris Marathon - 15/04/07
Four members of Wrekin Road Runners travelled to Europe last weekend to compete in the Paris Marathon. John and Sarah Aston, Wendy Searle and Anthony Nicholls ran the 31st annual 26.2 mile event, around the beautiful streets of the City. The route started at the L'Arc de Triomphe taking in such sights as the Champs Elysees, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.
John has completed several marathons including London and New York, but as Paris was his wife’s first marathon he chose to run it with her, both crossing the line in 4h 32m despite soaring temperatures that reached 30 degrees by 10:45.
Tony finished in his target time a personal best of 2h 59m. He was thankful to the official pacemakers who kept him on target. Wendy, whose Father also ran in the marathon finished in 4h 43m.

The Winner - Michelle Ross-Cope
'A brand new race, started by England international and Wolves legend Steve Bull, took place in Telford town park yesterday (Sunday). Supporters gathered to see Bully start the Ennstone 7 mile race, which had over 150 entrants, at 11 am in the arena.
The race, organised by Wrekin Road Runners, was a tarmac course going out and back along the Silkin Way. Michelle Ross-Cope, who is ranked fifth in Britain over ten miles, won the race by a comfortable margin of almost two minutes in 38.52.
Race director John Leonard was amazed "It was a fantastic performance, I've never known a woman to win a race before". Michelle, from City of Stoke club, ran the race as a warm up to representing England in Japan next week. Steve Cunningham was second home in 40.56. Like many runners in the race, Steve is not attached to a club but still beat Edward Davies of Maldwyn Harriers into third place in 41.33.
John was pleased with how the race went on the day. "There was an excellent atmosphere on the day and the race went without any problems. Very well done especially to Paul Hill, part of the management team at Ennstone, who was 13th overall and first Veteran over 40", he added. Ennstone will definitely be on board to sponsor the event next year as they were so pleased with how smoothly the event was run.
All runners received a medal at the finish and some welcome home made soup, provided by Wrekin Road Runners. A two mile fun run also took place which was won by 14 year old Thomas Halloway with Laura Porter first female home.

Hogweed Hilly Half - 11/03/07
On Sunday 11th March I took part in the Hogweed Hilly Half Marathon. The race contained four significant climbs at 2 miles, 7 miles, 9 miles and 12 miles. The rest of the course is best described as undulating albeit with some steep downhill sections. The most testing hill is the one at mile 9 ‘Kilcott Hill’ It is very, very steep and about two thirds up has a dogleg bend so just as you think you are reaching the summit you round the bend and are faced with another half mile climb. Most competitors seemed to be walking up this hill, but I was able to run (Thanks to Tony's hill sessions on Wednesday evenings). The race was really well organised by a friendly running club from Chipping Sodbury (always to be known as Chicken Slobbery in our house after being re-christened by my daughter Clare several years ago), there was a nice atmosphere and the marshals were very encouraging. The views from the tops of hills out over the Cotswold countryside made the climbs worthwhile. I can only describe the views as spectacular. We were faced with a few cars and half a dozen or so horses and several walkers who must have thought us mad trying to run up the same hills that they were struggling to walk up. I finished the race in 1 hour 54 minutes and 30 seconds making it my second fastest half marathon and my second sub 2 hour half marathon.

Nick Beer 10k at Llandudno 11/02/07
The weather was fine with blue skys and plenty of sunshine. Pat and I enjoyed the run up the Great Orme.
Times were: Pat 61mins, Kathy 75 mins
Action Heart 5m Dudley 25/02/07
A cold and wet one this. We didn't hear the starting gun and were wondering where everybody was going. We had hill after hill which was quite a shock to my system. It was good to see Ivor and Kim Denning at the race. I was amazed at the amount of worms on the road!!!
Times were: Marek Kaminski, 35.34; Kim Denning, 43.50; Sarah Hodgson, 49.10; Ivor Denning, 50.40; Kathy Ling, 60.00
Just as the race had started, the weather quickly deteriorated. It was a fast race with plenty of hills. All in all, very enjoyable. I was disappointed by the number of pubs closed en route since the last time I raced here.
Four Villages Half-Marathon - by Kathy Ling
'I managed to complete the Four Villages 1/2 Marathon but found it very hard as at the moment, I'm not fit enough and had a few problems en route. However, I was detemind to finish, and after 3:03, I was last person home. Still, I got my set of 5 years worth of medals and there's still more to come! Wrekin's own Ken Richards presented me with a lovely trophy on behalf for coming 3rd in the Ladies 60-64 in the NSRL.'
