Nick Beer 10k - 12th February
Report by Kathy Ling
John and I went to Llandudno and the weather was kind to us. This year was the 20th in remembrance of Nick Beer and there was a good entry, about 681.
After I had warmed up and was waiting for the start Ken Richards turned up and asked could he run with me because of his injuries as my pace would suit him. Well I have heard this before from many runners, I said ok but I know what’s coming- as soon as the gun goes off they just leave me.
The sun had come out and away we went up the Great Orme, Ken was ahead of me.I managed to pass three runners, the Great Orme road is at least 4k and a bit, so when you get to the top you are nice and warm.At that point the fog came in but once you were over the other side it was lovely.
When I got to 6k the dreaded ambulance was right behind me, I looked surprised at the driver and he shouted to me that the 3 runners had dropped out, we knew you’d be ok you being a tough so and so, well I thought I’ve been done I will be last again ( I know my place)
It was well marshalled and had a great atmosphere, I came in with a PB, John spat the dummy because he missed me coming in and muttered something about being in before my time.
Ken had a good run. The presentation was by the Mayor who was more concerned to get to watch the welsh rugby. I had
a nice china mug and goodie bag.
By the time I got home my chipped time was on my mobile which was great.
Ken Richards 1:14
Kathy Ling 1: 24 PB
I loved it and would do it again.
PS. The fish and chips were nice.

Carnethy 5 - 11th February
Report by Linda Edmondson
This is in the Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh and goes up the main 5 peaks with some nice steep ups and downs. I had a good run round until about half a mile from the end when I went over on my ankle as I tried not to run into the guy in front. The end of the race was a bit hop-a-long as a result. I was a bit annoyed not to get under an hour and a half (1:33:22) – although the ankle probably didn’t make that much difference. It’s just a year since I split my knee at Tarren Hendre – maybe I should give racing a miss this weekend!

A bit of a bleak day for this one – it wasn’t quite snowing, but it was hard work going uphill into the headwind. My time was 30.35.
Shifnal Gallop 10k - 29th January
Report by Kathy Ling
It was a very cold foggy morning as 163 runners were ready for the off. It was the usual thing, everybody gone and when I got to field three I suddenly realised I was in the wrong field as I could not see any foot prints, however I carried on and came out somewhere by the water station.
When I met the winner coming towards me I knew I was going the wrong way but I kept going as I felt so good.
I knew I had done my 2.5 k well before the 3k. One of the marshalls said “Oh Kathy we are very sorry but we thought everybody had gone through, what are you doing coming out of that field I just smiled and kept going as I wanted to do a PB.
It was good to see other Wrekin members there and well done to Kelvin Bierton first Wrekin in 40 26. (I was still wandering round the fields)
Well done to the rest of the Wrekin runners
I really enjoyed the race and was really pleased with my PB and yes I would do it again.

Wythenshawe park run - 28th January
Report by Linda Edmondson
It’s taken me about 2 years to get round to it, but I finally managed a park run on a bright frosty morning. The have 2 routes for this run and chose the one round the fields since the tracks were a little icy in places. I think the course is a bit short, but felt surprisingly good (far too early for a race for me) to finish in 24.57.
Blymhill 10k - 22nd January
Report by Kathy Ling
This a lovely cross country run with everything in it. The entries had doubled this year to 337, the hall is now built and has been in use since last September. There were lots of home made cakes and goodies along with hot drinks.
The race started off in the middle of the field, this was to avoid congestion at the beginning.
It was nice to see many Wrekin Road Runners.
Well done to Simon Hardiman who was first WRR home, 13th in 41:27.
Also well done to all the rest of the Wrekin gang....
I really enjoyed the xc race with all its interesting obstacles, it was well marked and marshalled. The wind was very strong and blowing all ways.

Twin Piers 10k - 21st January
Report by Kathy Ling
Jan, John and I travelled up to Colwyn Bay for the Town Piers 10k. When we arrived the wind was quite strong but it was dry. This year we were bussed up to Llandudno by a very modern bus instead of the dear old double decker.
While waiting at the start on the front of Llandudno the weather took a turn for the worse, Jan and I tried to hide behind some very tall runners. At last the gun went off but we never heard it, by this time the wind was whipping up the sea and sand but luck was with us because the wind was behind us and helped us on our way up the Little Orme as we approached Rhos on Sea.
We were completely soaked from the rain as we approached Colwyn Bay but then the sun came out, dried and nearly
burnt us. This year the race ended actually at the Colwyn Bay, normally we have to run past.
We both enjoyed the race, Jan ran a very good race. After we got changed we tried to comb our hair but was unable too
owing to the amount of sand in our hair.
I loved it and would do it again.

South Holme Circular - 15th January
Report by Linda Edmondson
This was a new race for me and the organiser had amended the course and told us it was 8 miles long. It went up a hillside and then did a big, flattish loop around some reservoirs behind Todmorden. Then it was down the hill again (bit skiddy since the ground was still frozen). Everyone with a garmin told us it was actually 9.1 miles long so I didn’t feel so bad about getting round in something like 1:26:45. Lovely day for it with great views.
Winter Tanners 30 Miles - 15th January
Sarah & Jon Aston ventured south to Surrey for the Winter Tanners, a 30 mile off road adventure from Leatherhead towards Guildford and back, mostly along or near the North Downs Way. The weather was bright sunshine but a bit chilly with most of the ground frozen solid throughout.

Vernon's Limp Wrist 5 mile - 1st January
Report by Kathy Ling
Sarah very kindly picked me up in her nice BMW with a soft top. The weather was ok until we got to Stafford then it went very cold and windy. The idea of this race is to estimate your time for 5 miles and you are not allowed to wear a watch.
It starts at the bottom of an incline but once you are on the old railway track you can settle down in to a rhythm, it was very enjoyable.
Looking at the results my estimated time was 1:08 but I was slower at 1:11, 3 minutes out. Sarah (the fast cat) was estimated 1 hour but she was faster at 49 minutes, 11 minutes out.
It was great fun and I would do it again.

Auld Lang Syne - 31st December
Report by Linda Edmondson
I rounded off the year on a rather wet, windy and bleak (i.e. normal) day just outside Haworth . The 6 mile race was most notable for some fine front running by local, tri-athlete heroes the Brownlee brothers. However, the likes of me were able to toddle along behind them. I was happy with a 73.56 minute splash through a lot of mud. Will I do it again? – very probably – did it last year after all.
Severn Loop 5k - 27th December
Report by Kathy Ling
139 entered on a lovely warm sunny day in the Quarry at Shrewsbury. It was a very enjoyable run backwards and forwards along the River Severn. I knew I was on the right road because the winner passed me three times. I was pleased with my time, and it was nice to see Robin Elliott and Sue Lloyd. I had a lovely surprise picking up the over 65 prize of a golden trainer. I would do it again.

On a very sunny but windy day, we were permitted to run around the walls for the first time for a while. They still devised a new route, however. I was taking it easy after a week with a nasty cough, so had time to enjoy the views and was happy with a 44.03 finish.

Telford Santa Run - 11th December
Report by Steve Gill
A novel race for a Sunday morning.
Dress up as Santa Claus and do a run of 1.2 miles in aid of the R.N.I.B. This event held in the Telford town park was great fun with a warm up beforehand (aerobics session) and ended with mince pie's and mulled wine. Approx 130 runners took part with places and times for most irrelevant.
7 Wrekin road runners took part - maybe more next year??
You should have seen peoples faces watching all those Santas doing the aerobics.
Great Langdale 10k - 10th December
Report by Linda Edmondson
Not content with getting soaked at the Great Langdale half marathon in September, I came back for a shorter wetting for the Christmas Pudding 10K. Actually, it was drier this time – just a thick drizzle at times. Anyway, I was pleased with 49.47, only 2 seconds slower than 5 years ago – and I was even second LV50.

Turkey Trot 5 miles - 4th December
Report by Kathy Ling
The race was at Aldersley Leisure Village and the weather was very cold and windy. Four from the WRR took part.
The race started on the race track at 10am and was nice and soft to the feet, once we did the track we set off up the hill which knocked the old lungs a bit. It seemed to take me ages to reach the 3 mile spot then I got going and really enjoyed it.
The usual comments were shouted at me by Brian Smith - could I be back by 1.30pm because he was marshalling
at the Wolves game, even the scrutinizers said could I be back for 4pm as they had a another appointment!
All in good fun but Brian Smith is off my Christmas card list ha ha. It was nice to see Julie Tatton run a good race and a PB , well done Julie. Not forgetting Janet Pugh who was not too happy running on the track - something new.
The star of the show was the one and only PAUL WILLIAM who ran a fantastic race, 1st in the over 60’s, well done Paul.
Me in my usual place.

David Staff Fell Race - 27th November
Report by Linda Edmondson
Nice sunny day for this 5 miler, but a bit windy on the top of the hill and some nice muddy parts as well, so times a bit slower than usual. I got round in 54.09 and was moving so fast at the end that (still injured) Neil didn’t even see me.
RNLI Reindeer run 5K - 26th November
Report by Kathy Ling
Jan Pugh and I travelled to Baggeridge Park in Dudley to do the 5k race - I fancied a quieter day. It was a very cold day, the races were due to start at 11am and the 10k went off first and we were told we could not start until 11:30.
By this time we were really cold trying to get out of the wind. At last we were off starting at the bottom of a very high hill, even the Father Christmas gave up at the top of the first hill. At first I found it a struggle but soon got into my stride. It’s the better side of suicide six with plenty of hills.
Our time was 36 minutes.
For photos see photo gallery
On Sunday Kathy then went on to complete a 2 hour Zumbathon with Sarah Hodgson at Madeley to raise money for Make a Wish Foundation.
Cannock 10k - 20th November
Report by Kathy Ling
It was a cold, wet and very foggy day as we approached the Cannock Chase centre.
The race started at 11am outside the park on the main road at the junction - I was wondering where the police were?
The whole of the race was on a main very busy road, after 1 kilometre it was bleep bleep hill after hill.
Because it was so foggy I felt that the hills melted into one big hill although in the 10k the back up was a big
pickup so I felt quite safe. Well I thought I’ve started so I’ll finish.
When I finally finished the race in the usual place, I was enjoying a cup of tea when the man from the pickup came rushing after me and twirled me round and said he had looked at my rear end for six miles just wanted to look at my front and gave me a big hug (he was a big man) The medal was nice and I finished in 1:30.
Just a point.....this race was run on a very busy road with plenty of traffic and the police apparently
agreed with the Rotary club to allow the race to take place (I bet we would not be allowed to do this
over here???)
This was a challenging race not quite off my list, I fancy another go next year.

Wrekin Wrecker - 20th November
Adam James 01.18.26
Mike Warren 01.27.52
Alex James 01.31.59
Kim Bennett 01.41.10
Report by Mike Warren
After being back in Bristol for 3 weeks I was beginning to miss the Wrekin, so woke up before my alarm clock looking forward to running around and over the Wrekin (and then around and over again). Arrived at the Buckatree to find some members from my old club, Amazing Feet (based in Kidderminster), had come along too, so was good to catch up
with them.
Weather could best be described as foggy. Although it was reasonably mild, so carrying around waterproof trousers and jacket seemed a bit over the top, but gave me an excuse to try out my new inov-8 pack, I did also have about a litre of water with me, but didn't really feel the need to drink it, I was mostly too out of breath to suck on the camel back style tube. The pack worked well anyway, so I'll be using it for longer training runs and races in the future.
Really nice to see Pauline and Steve turn up at the start to support, and also appearing out of the fog at various points as I ran around the race, and also Sharon right at the top of Wrekin, always good to get support from friendly faces (there may have been other Wrekin Road Runners there, but with the fog, and misted up glasses and trying to avoid tripping on rocks I didn't take in too much of what was around me). Also good to see Kim at the start, and Adam who was going
strongly as he passed me after the first descent. I really enjoy the variety of the running (and walking/crawling) involved in races like this with steep up-hills and down-hills, twisty bits, undulating bits, and flatter bits plus the sensation of getting to the top of a hill and running back down through forests keeps your mind of the pain in your legs. The final half mile is a bit of a killer with several short but steep dips and climbs, which would be familiar to anyone who does the Thursday night summer training around the Wrekin, but with several miles of racing in my legs I struggled to keep running until I knew the finish was just a 100 metres or so away downhill and I could speed upand avoid being overtaken yet again.
Completed it 6 and a bit minutes faster than last year, and enjoyed the run more, so, all in all, a good race for me.
Would I do it again ? Yes.

Brampton to Carlisle 10 miles - 19th November
Report by Linda Edmondson
I wanted to do a new race to celebrate my brand new age category and couldn’t find a suitable fell race so resorted to the roads for this classic 10 miler. It was a perfect day for it, sunny and still and it’s a good course and not too boring for a road race. Anyway, I was chuffed to manage a pb of 1:21:09 (chip time) which was a good 4 minutes faster than my target. Then it was off to Scotland for a celebratory meal and drink (or two). Would I do it again? Probably not, forgotten how much road running takes out of your legs and think that I’ll never come anywhere near that time again.

Cop Hill - 6th November
Report by Linda Edmondson
I had fun on this 7 mile fell/cross country two lapper. It was a lovely sunny day in Last of the Summer Wine land and we even treated ourselves to lunch next door to Nora Batty’s after the race. I got round in 60.35. The race was a Yorkshire veterans’ championship, but they were prepared to allow a Lancashire/Cheshire hybrid to take part without a surcharge! I had to concentrate hard on the downhills since I discovered my shoes had lost their grip on muddy descents!

The Deja Vu Marathon ( Crewe) - 6th November
Report by Denzil Martin
What a fantastic event set up by a small running club on their 400m running track. When we arrived it was foggy and you couldn't see from one side of the track to the other, but the sun soon burnt this off and the day was a fantastically sunny one. 40 people took part in this the 1st running of the event. We were treating to 105 laps of cheering supporters and lots of music. I finished in 4hrs 21 min. We were all given a huge goody bag and a medal.
Bronte Way - 30th October
Report by Linda Edmondson
Had a good time on this point to point race from Wycoller to Haworth. It’s about 8.5 miles and 1100 ft – more of a tough trail race than a fell race. After competing in fog last year, it was nice to have a bit of sunshine this time. I was delighted with a pb of 1:25:39 (not so bad as I count down the days to the next age category) and a bottle of Timothy Taylor Landlord.
Halloween 5 mile walk - 30th October
After the Fireworks 5 Jan and I fed and watered our men, then went up to Shrewsbury to do the Halloween 5 mile walk which started at the Castle. There was about fifty of us dressed up as witches. It was a little bit like the seven bridges but going through narrow streets and passages. It was ideal weather and suddenly became dark, great fun trying to frighten people. We really enjoyed walking along by the river in the quarry, up Grope lane, dark alleyways eventually getting back to the castle. This appeal is currently raising funds for equipment for the new cancer and haematology centre at Shrewsbury hospital for the official opening in autumn 2012.

Snowdonia Marathon - 29th October
‘Goodness gracious, guys and gals’, if you are only ever going to run one marathon in your life do this one. It is ‘as it 'appens’, the favourite marathon of both Sarah & Jon Aston. Awesome scenery (when you can see you through the mist and cloud) brilliant organisation with photographers, marshals and aid station crew out all day in the wind and the rain. This is one of the friendliest races you could wish for with locals cheering on “gadw i fyny” and “gallwch chi ei wneud” with the children wanting high fives. The lashing rain and wind made for ideal running conditions (too cold to run slowly) although the course is a bit too bumpy for a PB.

I enjoyed this 4ish mile/800 ft fell race on a sunny morning. The Summit in question is a friendly pub where the race starts and finishes and they do a tasty soup after the race. I felt I had a good run in 46:32 – the course has lengthened slightly so I can’t really compare it with my other runs here (it has to be better than the one the day after an all afternoon wedding though!). This race has a small but committed following and there were several regulars there but sadly not Bill Smith – a real fell running legend http://www.economist.com/node/21533348 who we paused to remember and all missed.
Beachy Head Marathon - 22nd October
Report by Ross Weston
My second time around for this iconic marathon event.
After a very long trek down to Eastbourne I arrived late on Friday night, quickly registered (checked out the side streets for the free parking spaces) and settled in for the night.
Having done this in torrential rain in 2009 I knew what to expect in terms of difficulty, but felt better prepared this time around.
As this event started as a walk many moons ago, you can enter as a Walker, Jogger, or (heaven forbid) Runner.
I opted for Walker.
The morning arrived and I set off in good time to grab my parking space and wait for the off.
St Bede’s School is the race HQ, and was overflowing with the smell of Deep Heat, Testosterone (everyone else), and Nervous Anticipation (me).
After a brief set of instructions over the tannoy we were off, runners straight up the hill, walkers (like me) slightly to the right and up the side path!
What followed was 26miles of jaw dropping beauty. Two years ago the views were obscured by mist & near torrential rain for the first 16 miles, this time the vista’s stretched as far as the eye could see, in all directions.
It must be said that the marshals and checkpoint staff are some of the friendliest you will ever come across, endlessly cheerful and encouraging they helped immensely.
Most of the event is relatively easy in the running stakes, a few inclines but nothing too hard. The ground was quite hard but nothing too severe, however, this all changes when you get to the Seven Sisters.
Even experienced marathon runners wince & cross themselves, muttering a curse or two at their very mention!
They really do take it out of you, and at such a late stage in the event (approx 19miles); however, the views are spectacular.
And eventually after approx 9-1/4 hours I wandered back to the finish in fairly good shape, and certainly could have carried on for a while longer which bodes well for next years Long Mynd Hike.
For the photos Ross took of this event see the Picture Gallery.
Amsterdam Half Marathon - 16th October
Report by Kathy Ling
John and I flew to Amsterdam on the Thursday, when we arrived the weather was gorgeous with blue skies
and continued all weekend. On Friday we visited the EXPO with lots of interesting stalls and on Saturday we went for a walk around the Red Light district and we spotted a redhead, there’s only one redhead who we know - Sara Rogers from Whitchurch Whippets. Sara was unable to do the half marathon owing to a heel injury, it was nice to see her.
In the evening we had the usual pasta.
On Sunday because the half marathon did not start until 1.30pm we were able to watch the marathon on TV now it was time for the half. The time stated as allowed was 3h 30m which turned out to be wrong. The time came for me to join the thousands in different time pens. The fast ones went off at 1.30pm we were kept back until 2pm this meant we had lost 30 minutes already and there was great confusion at the start with runners of different speeds. The weather was hotting up, but I was raring to get going,I knew I had to do 8k per hour to get in the 3 hour zone.
Everything was going fine until we approached 10k. Many marshalls were standing across the road trying to stop us continuing. The Americans (bless them) started shouting and ranting at the marshalls for not allowing us through
even though we were in our time zone, while all this was going on.....I sneaked around the back of some trees and took off following the blue line and just kept going. I was well in my time. Plenty of water stations with different types of drinks
not too sure what was in them?? but I got them down me. Still following the blue line I passed lovely windmills.
When I reached 12k and well in my time, I was determined to finish the race in the required time ( I wanted my medal)
19k I checked my watch the stadium was in sight and about 400m away I was surrounded by police on bikes etc etc and it was a wonderful atmosphere. Next thing I knew I was flat on my face and my sunglasses had cut in to my forehead.
I was gutted because I had trained hard for this, I was then pounced on by the first aid gang, I think they were desperate for customers and would not let me move. This where I spate the dummy out and demanded to be helped up as I wanted to allowed to finish the race. The blood was flowing freely and I looked a mess but I felt ok and started to run again no way was I going to give in...
The race director kept shouting at me he was on my right side this is the side with no eardrum telling me I had got to stop- no way I wanted my medal, when I got to the stadium the crowd were cheering the race director went away on his bike and came back with a medal and told me I had done the 13 miles. He gave me the medal and demanded I stop and was forced to get in the ambulance where the first aid started to clean me up, trying to stop the bleeding, I was still ranting. The doctor asked me a lot of questions and because I am not on any medication (only champagne) they decided I was ok and did not need a stitch so they slapped a plaster on me and let me go right at the entrance of the stadium.
I met John with the club's flag and the medal and we went back to the hotel to clean up.
I felt sorry for the runners who were stopped and picked up as they never finished the race.
In the evening we went with the Running Crazy gang on a conducted tour around the Red Light district my wound started bleeding again when this big policeman came up to me and grabbed my arm and said “you’re bleeding, have you been in a fight??”
We enjoyed a lovely meal in an Irish pub then moved on to another bar where I could get some champagne finishing the night with plenty of bubbles. It had been a fantastic day and I would do it again but next time would only do the 8k, I don't want to upset the race director again. If any one is thinking of doing the half marathon just check what your time is, you need to be 2h 30m in case they changed the rules.
Bells of Pattingham - 16th October
It was a beautiful autumn morning for the seven Wrekin Road Runners who tackled this 7 mile off road course. With all the recent good weather conditions were reported to be dry underfoot and they were all awarded the traditional horse brass at the finish. Photos taken on the day will be put on the Picture Gallery as soon as possible. In the meantime see Brian Smith’s photos by clicking here.

For 3 out of the 5 Wrekin Road Runners this was our first attempt at the big one.
It was ideal weather if not a little windy on some parts of the course. Out from England into Wales and back with us starting and finishing at Chester race course.
My account goes like this. Nice start mostly down hill or flat course up to 17 miles (going too fast for my own good) to which we then met a hill (not biggest in the world by any imagination) but a hill, or should I call it my wall.
I am not ashamed to admit that I walked up the hill. After that my race plan went extremely pear shaped, long gone was consistent paced 9 minute miles to achieve my dream time of 3.59hrs. I struggled (like a lot of other people I may add) to run at all for long periods with still 9 miles left to go.
I now just wanted to complete the dam thing if it killed me.
With each mile going by (very slowly) I got closer and closer. For the final 800 metres we entered the race course and headed to the finishing post at a time of 4.09hrs.
The actual event was fanastically organised, lots of water stations and toilets and it was something different to finish in front of the grandstand. The crowds were fantastic and made even better that they called your name out (everybody’s name on their race number).
A massive thank you to the following people who came and cheered us on.
Tony + friend,Steve Wootton,Caroline Princep-Beresford,George(fan club member),Mick turner and of course my family and close friends.
Thanks to Jon + Sarah for supporting Pauline and Sarah round on their big day. Just a little jog for these 2 veterans of the distance.
I now have a lot more respect for the distance and the people that do this on a regular basis.
Now in the immortal words of Kathy Ling would I do it again? (probably not but you never know)
Report by Jon Aston
The famous Wrekin Road Runners stable fielded five runners for the second edition of the MBNA Chester Marathon. All wearing the orange, black and white racing silks of the stable were Thoroughbred Steve Gill, fillies Sarah Turner and Pauline Kesek were joined by the experienced ‘old nag’ Sarah and ‘grumpy gelding’ Jogging Jon Aston who all came under starters orders for the 209.6 furlong MBNA Chester Marathon.
The weather was perfect for this fantastic event that started and finished on the famous Chester race course (Sarah Aston said she was grateful that Chester is not a National Hunt course).
Upon leaving the race course runners and riders took to the streets of the city passing beneath the famous walls, by the town hall, past famous shopping streets and the roman amphitheatre, they were supported by the cheers and clapping of enthusiastic crowds.
Upon leaving the city the route took participants through Cheshire and Welsh countryside and picturesque villages. Marshals and locals provided excellent support throughout with scouts and air cadets helping along the route. All roads were completely traffic free and the water stations plentiful and often great fun, including the beach bar at mile 12 where all the volunteers wore grass skirts and Hawaiian music was played.
Instead of being presented with a rosette, nose bag and prize money, runners who finished were given a goody bag, long sleeved technical shirt and a nice medal.
First past the post for Wrekin was Steve who along with Pauline and Sarah Turner completed their first time out at this distance. All three did amazingly well to stay the course and join the ever growing band of Wrekin marathon runners. All agreed it was a great event and most I think would do it again.
Breidden Hills - 9th October
Report by Linda Edmondson
Had fun on this tough little fell race, which was the last counter in the North Wales Fell Running Championship.
I generally don’t run very well at this one, but was quite pleased with 1:34:15 this time. Lots of runners got temporarily mislocated due to some mischievous person moving some of the arrows and tape. I was fine, since I just went the way I always do (albeit slowly) – so my relative time was improved, even if my position probably was about the same. I was very careful coming down the rocky section since I knew Al was capturing every move……Click Here
No idea if I managed not to be last LV45 in the N Wales series – but I’ve had fun doing it which is the main thing (if as great a sportsman as Didier Couche competes “pour le plaisir”, I see no harm in following his lead).
Newport Duathlon - 2nd October
Report by Donna Howells
I did something I never tried before this weekend which was a Duathlon, 5k run - 25K bike - 5K run. My time was 2:01:03 which I was happy with, although I was 82nd out of 96 but I was the rookie. My runs were dreadful but I must have made time up on the bike which was amazing as I'd only ridden it my bike twice before hand and not really my discipline.
Good event, marshalls really friendly and very supportive, £20 to enter and you got food after the event and a nice mug in your goody bag. Showers were available and it was held at Knighton Social club near Newport.
The 5k runs seemed longer to me and someone else also said their Garmin said we had run 3.6 miles but I would enter again, really enjoyed it.
Budapest Marathon - 2nd October
Three Wrekin Road Runners, Sarah, Mark and Jon
Together with their chief supporter Yvonne
Took off to fly to Budapest
On yet another marathon running quest
They fell in love with this great city
With its river and buildings so pretty
Saw castles and palaces
And lots of fine churches
A bus float on the Danube
Rode on a boat and the underground tube
Ate plenty of good food, goulash and cakes
And shopped for souvenirs and keepsakes
It was so hot on the day of the race
That the three struggled to keep up a good pace
Plenty of water stations proved to be a lifeline
Cheered by Yvonne they ran to cross the finish line
A medal, t-shirt and goody bag
Followed by the obligatory photo with the club flag
All four enjoyed their Hungarian sojourn
And yes we would do it again and hope one day soon to return

Kidderminster Shuttle - 2nd October
Report by Kathy Ling
Jan and I traveled to Stourport Sports club just on the outskirts of Kidderminster for this event, the weather was quite cool. Jan did the 5k and I did the 10k. The race started on a running track and then on to the main road and up a bleep hill when the weather really started to warm up. It’s ok for Dave Mansbridge who came in first, it was one and half
laps. During this race I needed plenty of water. I was doing a lot of grumbling to myself wondering what am I doing here, when some footballers started to cheer at me this made me feel ashamed of myself because my dear friend had passed away last night then I realised how lucky I am to be doing what I am doing so I picked up my little feet and got running round the track, to finish the race. In the really hot weather there were a couple of casualties.
A final note Jan and myself had nothing to do with the big explosion and fire at Kidderminster we were just passing through [honest]

Sandstone Trail B Race - 2nd October
Report by Linda Edmondson
It made a change not to be running during a deluge, but actually it was a bit warm and muggy for this race (in October too!!!). However, it was as dry underfoot as I’ve ever known it which seemed to suit me – I completed the 10.6 miles in 1:43:24, but still had time for some nostalgic reminiscences (route goes through several childhood haunts).

Shugborough Hall 5k & 10k - 25th Sepember
Report by Kathy Ling
On Sunday 25th September we went to Shugborough Hall. Jan did the 5k and I did the 10k this was for Little Hearts (children with only half a heart)
By the time we got to the starting place we had done enough walking and warmed up however the race was late starting, it was a two lap course all around the hall and off across the fields. There were plenty of cow pats but we were given plenty of warning, I am used to this as I live in the middle of a field. Then we were in for a shock, we had a hill to attack but it was ok and running through the woods was awesome plus the scenery. We went back to the start and did the course again. We really enjoyed the race and will do it again.
I’m not too sure about times

The Epic Adventures of Miserable Bleeder and Mrs Squarah Meldrew Have Resumed!
As is our want, the traditional race tactic for Ross and myself is to moan our way around the majority of any course. Sunday was no exception, we began with UK politics and the state of the country's economy then moved swiftly on to the cost of living, people who fiddle other people, people who don't look after animals, people who drive badly and how rubbish our respective satnavs are.
The race itself however was a delight and gave no raw material for moaning. A course with just enough challenge, and opportunity for speed (as can be seen from our times). We encountered beautiful and varied scenery, a good variety of safe running surfaces and some nice posh houses to nosey into if you slowed down a bit when you passed them.
Organisation was excellent, marshalls were friendly and good humoured, and the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable. To add to the atmosphere there were cakes and tea, yoghurt freebies and a bit of a do in the adjacent pub. For me, it was a last minute swap from the Walsall Arboretum 10k which I have done many times and enjoyed. Now, I'm afraid its bye bye Walsall, hello Hinstock, already looking forward to next year's delightful moan!

Great Langdale Half Marathon - 24th September
Report by Linda Edmondson
It had seemed like a good idea to end a week’s holiday in The Lakes with the Great Langdale Half. I wasn’t so sure on the start line as the thick drizzle teamed down. Anyway, luckily it was pretty warm and my fell running stood me in good stead for the constant ups and downs on this course. I was shouted on by Paul Muller with just a mile to go. Neil thinks Paul was 3rd (not seen results yet and he could have missed a runner). Although I don’t know my official time I was pleased to come in around 2 hours (my forecast was 2.15!) – will be more pleased if on the right side of 2.

Update from Linda- she did 2:03:04. Paul Muller was 3rd in 1:23:52.

Shrewsbury Seven Bridges Road Race - 18th September
Report by Kathy Ling
On Sunday morning 251 took part in the Seven Bridges 10k, the weather was quite wet just before the race started, and I was thinking about the slippery conditions underfoot. The marshall's hooter would not start so it was just a quick go.....
I love this race but its the first little bit that gets me after that I settle down. A lovely run along the river Severn under the railway bridge and it was just about raining which suits me, back up over the English bridge, across Fry's bridge the water lady kept telling me that I was quicker than last year then over the hospital bridge along the path in front of the rowing club where I was offered the chance to have a go in the rowing boat (no thank you) the marshall told me I was faster than last year.Back in the quarry over the Welsh bridge I ran along the river took off across the car part towards the wobbly bridge and was shouted to come back. By now the sun had come and it was hotting up and then I just remembered about the little up towards the end and they were still telling me I was quicker than last year I did not have the heart to tell then I was nowhere near Shrewsbury last year????.
It was nice to see lots of Wrekin members taking part.
I loved it and hope to do it again next year.

Helen Clitheroe - Cowm Reservoir 5K - 14th September
Report by Linda Edmondson
This was a race of legends - organised by the legend that is Andy O'Sullivan on behalf of Helen Clitheroe who started the race but didn't compete (small matter of GNR on Sunday I believe) and attended by Ron Hill and a few other stalwarts
of the NW running scene. Although I do a few of Andy's races each year I hadn't done this one before and it was hard work but fun. No idea what time I did, but marshall Neil took the photo that shows I was going really fast (he will stick to the day job I think). Great banter in the pub afterwards - Helen is lovely - see pic of her with Ron.
Tallinn 10k - 11th September
Report by Kathy Ling
John and I flew to Tallinn on Thursday 8th Sept and stayed at a very old fashioned hotel that once was a Russian bank its still had the bank's original vaults and was right in the middle of the city of Tallinn. With its very uneven cobbled streets and high uneven pavements, I had to take care not to trip up or fall down a hole, the city is surrounded by a very big wall, towers and gates, a real medieval town.
On Saturday I collected my number- 2569, no goodie bag, if you wished to buy a T Shirt it was 25 euros. In the afternoon children's races were held which made it a lovely atmosphere.
On Sunday the marathon started at 9am John and I went to the watch the start a big buzz went around the spectators because of the Kenyans, off they went, we just managed to get to the finish in time to see them coming over the finish line. 1st winning by one [footstep] Julius Muriuki new track record 2:12:56, 2nd Isaack Kosgeri 2:13:17 and 3rd Ahoucher Hassan 2:13:17.
As soon as the race was over they were whisked away so never saw much of them.
The half marathon was won by a Lativan, Zolnerouics in 1:07
In the 10k there were 7,625 entries, because my number was 2569 I was put in pen 6 and not by my time which I thought it was odd how ever we all did the usual warming up stuff etc. The gun went off and there were lots of fast runners in my pen so I had to keep to the left side or in the gutter to keep out of trouble, it was completely congested with runners trying to pass the slower runners eg. Me.
By this time it was really hot and many runners had fallen I just kept me head down, at about 3k it began to thin out a bit so now I could get my self into a rhythm now I had the problem of trying to pass slower runners than me. The route took us along the seafront and a nice breeze was most welcome, then around the city walls through different parks, the support from the spectators were just fantastic with their support it gave it a great atmosphere.
Just before the finish John met me and gave me the club's flag to finish my 10k race.
I really enjoyed the race, the atmosphere, I came in 7,127 out of 7,625 (makes a change not coming last)
after us came the Nordic walkers and finally the walkers,it was all well organized.
This trip to Tallinn was a wonderful experience and I would love to do it again but since they have change to euros I would have to save up a lot more the next time around.

Hellrunner Series-Hell up North - 10th September
Report by Sarah Turner
Well we arrived nice and early ready for our appointment with Hell. I completed this race back in 2009 it was hard, and told Mick it was fun! Then after talking him into running it in 2011, I realised just how hard it really was. You couldn’t run it all. It was impossible with queues at the first mile (after the first killer hill) then when we entered the forest, more queues were to follow. We entered the first bog! It was bigger, smellier and muddier than 2009 took us 15 minutes to navigate that. No water stations till the 8th mile, we were then beginning to think the bog water would be our saviour! YUK! But after a hard slog through mud, sweat, more mud and pain, we found ourselves at the famed “Hills of Hell” these hills were not for the faint hearted. You had to climb up these vertical drops using the tree roots and rocks as an aid, after the first hill, we realised we had four more to conquer. But then on the 10th mile we heard the “Devils Disco” at the “Bog of Doom” Suddenly the feeling of dread and happiness came over us thinking we are at the end. We had arrived at the “Bog of Doom” on the 12th mile.. This bog was even longer, deeper, with added quick sand...CAKED with mud, we approached the finish line.. WOW we made it! This race is hard, if we decide to do it next year (Which we will) Hill work, running up and down the Wrekin will be the order of the day…

Birmingham Canal Canter - 10th September
Report by Jon Aston
Starting at the Ackers adventure centre in Sparkbrook Birmingham this event took us on a tour of the canals of Birmingham. We started by going south on a combination of canals and footpaths taking us past Sarehole Mill where JRR Tolkein is supposed to have taken inspiration for Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. We ran through some pretty parkland (it is amazing what greenery there is in the middle of the city) and to our first self clip checkpoint at Major’s Green, from where we ran along the canal to the first check point at The Horseshoe Inn where we were served hot toast and porridge and met fellow Wrekin Road Runner Catherine Hughes and her sister-in-law who were walking the route. From here headed towards and then ran north alongside the Birmingham & Worcester Canal to reach the next checkpoint just past mile 13 at Edgbaston. This checkpoint supplied us with sandwiches and drinks. Here met another club member Caroline Princep Beresfod and her daughters who were also tackling the 26 mile route.
Next we continued north and right into the heart of Birmingham running through Brindley Place, passing the NIA and Sealife Centre from where we went east along the Wolverhampton Canal to Winson Green where we looped round and back towards the city centre. The check point just after Winson Green was like being in a cake shop with numerous types of cake to be sampled (see the picture on the gallery page). After reaching the city again we turned north passing Aston to reach the next checkpoint and more cake just as the canal came under Spaghetti Junction, from here we turned south for the last few miles a final checkpoint at Bordesley Junction and returning to the start at the Ackers Centre where we enjoyed a post run meal of jacket Potatoes, apple pie and custard.
This is a great event, it is amazing how green the middle of big city can be, the cakes were great and we got to meet up with lots of friends. I would do it again.

The last race of the 2011 Telford Athletic Club Sexarathon Series saw 28 Wrekin Road Runners toe the start line. Although the weather conditions were good for running the course was a little testing with the early part of the route narrowed by parked cars and a barrier that had to be negotiated. Out of a field of 256 entrants Jordan Stamp was the first club member home in 30th place. Paul Williams was first male vet 60, Wendy Scott was first female vet 50 with Deb Sandeman 2nd.
The series results saw Wendy Scott (FV50) and Ian Emery (MV65) win their age categories with Sarah Aston (FV40) second and Deb Sandeman (FV50) third. Photographs will be published later.

Wolverhampton Marathon and Half Marathon - 4th September
Report by Jon Aston
Near perfect weather conditions for distance running and a fast course greeted the Wrekin Road Runners who took part in these races. The course was busy throughout the half marathon and first lap of the marathon but much quieter for the marathon runners who had to complete a second lap. There were some great pockets of support along the route with a number of people giving drinks, sweets and fruit to runners from their gardens and along the route. Wrekin members were well supported by Ken Richards who was near mile 10/20 with a bag of Jelly Babies, Caroline Beresford and Steve Wootton at about mile 11 and Ian Emery and Paul Williams at the finish line.

Little Aston 5 Mile - 4th September
Report by Kathy Ling
Jan and I travelled to Little Aston on a dull morning, we were quite early so we were enjoying a nice cup of tea when a women with a very unhappy and strange look on her face was looking at me, went away then came back again still with the hard look on her face. I knew straight away what she was doing, she was eyeing me up for the age group.
The race started on time and down the road we went, quiet little roads, the course was one big loop, so I met Dave Mansbridge on his way back as the winner. The weather picked up and became very hot.
Jan had a very good run in just the hour I followed in 64 minutes so once again I was enjoying another cup of tea while the presentation took part.
The presentation started with the oldest category and because I was busy talking, I did not hear the name Kath Ling yes Ling of the Wrekin called out until Jan told me, a very nice surprise and a lovely bottle of wine. [1st 65 to 69]
A little thought for next year, its only 5 miles, more members of the Wrekin Road runners to
have a go???[2nd September 2012]
Loved the race, would do it again.
Kathy Ling 64 minutes
Jan Pugh 60 minutes (well done)
Half Peris Horseshoe (8.5 miles/4500ft) - 3rd September
Report by Linda Edmondson
This is a tough race (Llanberis to Pen-y-Pass over Elidr Fawr, Y Garn and Gldyr Fawr). The “real” runners do the full horseshoe – but this was just enough for me. It was quite an experience in heavy rain and very low cloud. Luckily Neil and I had done a thorough recce so I wasn’t too perturbed by the lack of visibility and running on my own for a lot of the race. There are some steep climbs on this one and my back was starting to niggle on the last one up Glydr Fawr, however, it eased off on the descent to Pen-y-Pass, which was rather like running down a stream (next time I’ll take flippers). I was very happy to get around in about 3 hours 4 mins (not seen results yet) and even happier to dry off and hit the tea shop.
Sevenbridges 10k Walk - 29th Aug

Ellesmere 10k - 28th August
Report by Kathy Ling
This was the first time I have done this race and it was great to see so many Wrekin Road Runners there. A very good entry of 427,the weather was a bit cool and windy. The race started on time and was chip timed.
This race was a fast and scenic course taking in the Mere also the Llangollen canal, the roads were well marshalled and no traffic problems, and a 100% support from spectators as well as the marshalls. Sarah kept me company, there were a few laughs on the course - a lady in a car yelled out “how old is that women” pointing at me. A young man on a bike looked puzzled, I shouted 67, she answered “Up with the women” then Sarah called out “Yes I am her mother “ causing the young man to nearly fall off his bike. It was lovely running around the mere getting lots of support from onlookers,
we eventually came to the Llangollen canal which made it even more enjoyable with all the lovely long boats to look at, then Sarah had to cause trouble, she saw a man pulling his long boat and just had to stop and give him a hand. Congratulation to all our Wrekin Road Runners on completing the 10k

Harrock Hill 4 (5.2miles/900 ft) - 24th August
Report by Linda Edmondson
A nice fast, short evening race run on a lovely evening (almost too sunny at times). I ran round in 50.47. It was a very poignant event, however, since Chorley’s Mike Ogle had died fell racing the previous Saturday and his family and Chorley Harriers turned out in force as a tribute. http://www.chorleyharriers.co.uk/gallery/harrock-hill-fell-race-august-2011/
If you’ve ever raced in the north west you could well have seen Mike – he was a blind runner who ran on road and fell with a guide and was a huge inspiration to many. http://www.chorley-guardian.co.uk/community/runner_62_died_doing_what_he_loved_1_3709157
Ragleth Inn Fell Race - 24th August
Report by Steve Gill
On a lovely evening 5 Wrekin Road Runners entered the final fell race for the summer at the Ragleth Inn in Stretton.
Great performances from 4 out of the 5 runners with Jordan Stamp winning the U16 age group in finishing just behind Tony Nichols who himself finished 13th overall.
Good runs by Cameron Stamp and Mike Warren were also had. That does leave myself who had a shocker of a run and finished close to last place.
This was extremely hard with an up hill run / walk to start followed by more up and down bits. The final hill was murderous with lots of people on their hands and knees in an attempt to reach the top. I have to admit I stopped a few times and sat down and admired the view while I contemplated what death must feel like. I challenge anyone to have a go but don't say I didn't warn you.
13th Tony Nicholls -31.26
17th Jordan Stamp -32.17 - I think as his time has disappeared off the results page
53rd Mike Warren- 38.34
60th Cameron Stamp- 39.17
93rd Steve Gill - 45.59
103 runners in total.

Report from Lee Rudd
A great weekend was had by all despite the extreme rain not a glimpse of sunshine in Wales.
The course was very wet and muddy and was the worst conditions seen on the run for a very long time.
And the few beers and music soon helped cheer everyone up after a hard run, lots of injuries and getting very wet.Well done everyone for completing a gruelling run, and lets hope we can get a few more to join us next year.
Report from Kathy Ling
The weather was just right for us, I always find the start a stinker but once warmed up I just love it. No dead sheep this time, but very muddy and we 10k runners gave the mud a good turning over ready for the 14milers. I lost and found my trainer again, well marshalled it was nice to see Caroline, Will and great support from Pauline,Steve,Lee and the rest of the Wrekin gang.
I would do it again
Report from Mike Warren
Great trip despite weather being generally wet. Thanks to Lee for organising camping and providing local knowledge about which cafe and fish and chip shop to go to.
For the main race it pretty much rained all the way round and was muddy and very slippery in places, but I had a good run and was really pleased to squeeze in under 2 hours. It's a tough course, but great atmosphere with spectators around the course and on the train cheering all the way, great views (when you get a chance to look up) and being
held on a Saturday afternoon means you can relax on the Saturday evening with a drink and enjoy a swim in the sea on the Sunday.
I definitely plan to go again next year, and would recommend it to anyone who fancies something a bit different, if you don't fancy 14 miles then the 10k lets you have a race in the morning then watch the 14m race.
Neil Howells Memorial Race 4.4 - 19th August
Report by Kathy Ling
This was the last race in the series,John and I travelled up early in the afternoon and booked ourselves in the local hotel called The Dragon, this is because it where the race finished. Its a 4.4m of multi terrain and big hills, the race starts on the Montgomery show ground. While trying to warm up I was approached by my friend Sheila Symonds who is 75 and definitely a designer runner not like me who informed me we are starting now so I had no choice - check photos.
After a mile we started one of the big hills called Ffrydd Faldwyn back down to main road then back up another hill this one was a monument to the last war, back down around the ancient Celtic fort not easy then down a very very steep town hill, finishing in front of Montgomery town hall. I was pleased with my time 1 hour 10 minutes.
I was surprised to win the 0/65 and also the O/65 series nice goodies too.
I managed to find time for a couple of brandies and food, get ready for next day.
I always do these series, everybody is so friendly, look forward to next year.

Gladstone 9 - Sunday 14th August
Report by Linda Edmondson
I wasn’t in Great Warford, but I was just over the hill from Kathy on Sunday. I did the Gladstone 9 which starts at a pub in Penmaenmawr and then takes a round-about route over Tal-y-Fan and Foel Lus. It’s 9 miles and pretty hilly. It was a bit too sunny for me earlier on, but did get cooler and I was glad I’d taken water. I did 2.01.05 – faster than 3 years ago and, unlike some, didn’t get lost.
I’ve done quite a few races over the summer, I’ve been mixing some short fell races (Eddie’s Revenge, Push up the Pincyn, Great Hucklow, Bradwell) with trail/road 5Ks (Ian Terry and 2 Sale Sizzlers).
Great Warford 10 mile Road Race - 14th August
Report by Donna Howells
I entered this race as I needed to do a 10 miler as part of my training for half marathon and was not in Luca's good books as it was on his 11th birthday and I entered his Dad to run along with me to encourage me on.
After a change of car from a flat tyre we arrived in plenty of time and parking was opposite the David Lewis Centre, perfect as it was only a short walk for us to go and pick up our race numbers, we entered on line but they weren't posting out.
Had good toilet facilities and changing area.
It was on an accurately measured country lane course consisting of approx one lap of about 2 miles and two laps of approx 4 miles. I would have called it undulating. Water stations were at 2.5 and 6.5 miles and well manned. Every mile was well sign posted, which was good for me but I forgot my watch and chickened out of letting my husband run at my pace as I thought he'd be bored so ran the race some what blind as I had no clue how I was doing. Although I felt I didn't run on top form after a week away in Devon I came in at 1 hour 31 mins and 8 secs. Just 1 min 8 sec over my scheduled time. So was pleasantly surprised to only come 15 mins behind my husband ( he had competed in Ironman 2 weeks ago though).
I was very proud to have Wrekin Road Runners vest top on and had big cheers when the MC called out Wrekin Road Runners/ Linda Edmondson, but they got my name right the next time round.
We had a fantastic momento, at finish and flap jacks. Wished they had offered me a drink which I desperately need but they were away from finish line with donations of 50p, which of course I didn't mind but not prepared for and had to find Luca who was in charge of the belongings.
I would enter again.
Llandudno Great Orme 15K Challenge - 14th August
Report by Kathy Ling
What a day, the weather was very kind to us. The race was delayed owing to seven people been stranded in the sea.
First the offshore boat went out then the main life boat had to go not forgetting the helicopter. Once the rescue was on its way, we were called back to the start, at last we were off. I managed to slow run all the way up the Great Orme without stopping. I then was quite happy to run along the flat bit and the down to the West shore, when I got to the turnaround point one of the marshalls was offering me a can of stout I asked “Have you any champagne?”, he gave me a funny look and I ended up with water [thank goodness] I managed to jog three quarters back up from the West shore but needed to walk the last bit before reaching Great Orme. I thought once I got to the top I would be ok [wrong] running down the Orme was one of the hardest I have ever done because of my knees and my balance however I managed to finish the race, my time was 2h 22m. This not a race for runners with knee trouble......
I would do it again, a goodie bag and nice medal.
South Coast Sprint Triathlon - 13th August

Staffs Knot 5 Mile - 10th August
Report by Kathy Ling
The weather before the the race was very windy and cold. We were all asked to clap for one minute, the reason was to remember a young lady of 35 years old, a runner named Claire Newton who had won this race twice and had passed away this year through cancer. One of things she loved to hear was the clapping when she came in winning the race.
It was nice to see Caroline and Steve who always find time to wish me luck. The course was slightly different from last time but just as testing. It was an interesting memento.... but as well as a memento I got something extra, because I was last I got a lovely towel. I loved the race and would do it again.

This was a special day for me because today eleven years ago I started running with the Wrekin Road Runners AND WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME I HAVE HAD. Today’s race was very good for me, I did a pb, although it was quite warm I seemed to attack the two long hills much easier than last year. The race was well marshalled with plenty of water stations. I won a very nice plaque for 0/65. Not forgetting the goodie bag. My time was 1:17:44.
I’ll just keep on running fingers crossed..
I would do it again.

The Enville F C Multi Terrain 10k - 31st July
Report by Kathy Ling
The race started at 10am but unfortunately only 49 turned up for the race. It was already getting hot, the pavilion was not open because the race people were not informed about the christening therefore no refreshments e.g. cakes and tea.
However we got going through the lovely park and attacked this bleep big hill, it was getting quite hot, once on top of the big hill the view was awesome. Everywhere the ground was very hard and uneven, most of the fields was brown with dryness. Coming down the hills there was a slight wind to cool you off but then again it was off again for the second round of that bleep hill. I just kept going, and managed to finish slightly quicker than last year. There was only two marshalls on the route which is not good for slow people like me. However not letting Wrekin club down I hung in there after drinking 4 pints of water.
We went to the Fat Cat pub for something more interesting, my time 1h 50m
I would love to do it again but feel after four years of this race the marshalling has got worse each year, [its not off my list]
Kingsbury 12k - 30th July

A lovely evening at the Kingsbury Water Park, a little warm. The race started off at 6.30pm, left me standing because I did not hear the faint gun. The conditions were very dry underfoot, a couple of hills, but very well marshalled and plenty
of water stations. 7.3 miles was a little bit different, but ok.
I think my time was 1h 45m very pleased and would love to do it again.

Stiperstones Fell Race - 13th July
Report by Steve Gill
On a gorgeous night 4 Wrekin road runners set off to the Shropshire hills. As this was my first fell race and I was pooping myself.
Up a hill ( only able to walk as it was so steep) and over the other side and down. Then along the top of the Stiperstones (long steady hill climb ) followed by a steep downhill run.
Total mileage was 3.7 miles.
This was definitely harder than running around the Wrekin so if you like a real challenge you should go for it.
A nice pint and a chip butty to follow at the pub.
108 runners in total
Tony Nicholls = 10th in 31.12
Cameron Stamp = 42nd in 36.54
Stephen Gill = 54th in 38.26
Mike Warren = 73rd in 40.49

After leaving Shropshire the weather deteriorated rapidly and by the time the race started it was floods everywhere, not forgetting the odd clap of thunder. We started off in deep water, through a dark park and 8" of water, alongside a fast moving river, a bit hilly but I was determined to finish the 5k.
It was good to get back to a dry Shropshire. My time was 37 minutes.
Rick’s Relays - 6th July
Report by Mike Warren
It was a hot July evening when we arrived in Carding Mill Valley, at least in my dreams when I decided to give this fun fell race event a go. In reality it was raining and cold enough for me to be shivering in a fleece and waterproof whilst looking up at the hills and picking more or less at random who would run up each one.
Despite the rain which did stop occasionally, this was a great, fun event, with 9 teams of 4 (or less) taking part. Each runner running a leg of between 10 and 20 minutes out and back from the car park handing over the baton to the next runner - up to the top of the surrounding hills and back down by the route of your choice, or up the road past the top car park and back down. Having three teams from Wrekin Road Runners taking part and being able to see the runners on a
large percentage of the "course" made for some good spectating and a good club event. Everyone there will have their own story to tell depending on what leg they ran, and which legs the could spectate on, but Tony's first place in the first leg stood out as a great run taking a novel route up the hill after everyone else apart from him and Cerys had set off in a completely different direction. Also good to see several Wrekin Road Runner's who haven't tried a fell race before giving this a go and seeming to enjoy it. Thanks to everyone for turning up as when I suggested it I thought we might just
about scrape together one team. So Stiperstones next Wednesday ?

Well I arrived nice and early ready for my time slot to start 11.40am, only to find out, I could have gone earlier. So I did (I arrived 40 mins early) already I was nursing an Achilles Tendonitis injury and wanted to use this race as part of my Marathon training, I was aware I was going to have a slow time.
I was very surprised with the friendliness, excellent organisation for the start. During the race, it was good, little cheering, but that’s what you get when you are running through the canal network. I loved the cheering from the fishermen/women, and people passing on the barges, Marshals were encouraging and not patronising. (Yes we get patronising marshals at races! ) The route was a little hard, for a flat race the surface was a little challenging but don’t worry its nothing to lose any sleep over. For a Black Country route, the scenery was great. What a great sight to see the end, yet running into Birmingham and finishing at Brindley Place was just warming. When I ran through the finish, I was greeted with a warm welcome, lots of music and loads of people to cheer you. Be warned the mile markers were a little out.. For a small race, I would highly recommend this, and a must do. I will return next year to firstly to smash my PW slow time and secondly run it injury free.
In conclusion, BBCHM is a great small race with a big welcome to club, racers and new runners alike. Oh I nearly forgot the most important thing…. you get a medal at the end with a goody bag. (Yes I need my medal) So 2012 here I come…….

For the eleventh successive year a group of Telford/Cheadle/Newcastle runners took part in a series of races on June 18/19th in Caen-Normandy-France, this was to commemorate the D-Day landing's liberation of France. The races consisted of the ladies only 5k, the Liberation 10k, the Pegasus half-marathon, and the Marathon de la Liberte. Running under the Wrekin banner the contingent excelled themselves yet again, with past honours this year was no exception, seven runner's took part in the 10k and four took to the winning rostrum.
Winning the 10k race out of 3,000 entries was Chris Davis, time 30:52, Chris still holds the course record. 3rd overall and 1st vet male was Mark Dalkins in 32.22,next was sister Amanda Davis 3rd lady 1st lady Vet in 39.58 and completing the prize winners was Paul Williams taking 1st Male-Vet 0/60 Category in a time of 41.43, Following runner's were Jenny Lenton 53.42, Ken Richard's 80.16, and Ian Emery 81.54. Blakedown Bolt - 17th June
Report by Kathy Ling
Just before the race it became quite damp, this race takes part in a very nice village at Blakedown, its a very popular one and always fills up quickly. After running around the sports field, we came to the woods and hills, across ploughed fields, climbing up a very sandy hill before coming down to cross a lovely cool stream. It’s always well marshalled and has plenty of encouragement. I always seem to collect lots of people who run the the last mile with me, very nice. I would do it again.
Now I am resting ready for my big and important event.....
My time was 1h 36m.
Two Lads Fell Race, Horwich - 16th June
Report by Linda Edmondson
Had a good time at this 5.25m/900 ft fell race. It’s a nice course – big ascent, a nice undulating circuit up to the very top and then down-hill all the way. Completed it in 51.54.
Rodney’s Pillar Fell Race - 15th June
Report by Mike Warren
After attending recent fell races to take photographs whilst waiting for my ankle to recover from a sprain it was good to be able to be running in one. Heavy rain about an hour before the start left some of the course quite slippy, but the rain stopped in time for the start and it was another great mid week evening fell race, steep with nice views. Good to meet Adam there too.

Malvern Joggers 10K - 14th June
Report by Kathy Ling
On Tuesday I received a email, asking me would I like to start early at 7 pm with a few of the Malvern Joggers because they felt intimidated by the times so I said yes, well on the night plan [A] became [B]. When I got to the start there was only me.with my mentor Jenni, change of plan owing to the Health and Safety rules, I went off at 7 pm on my own with my mentor,it was brilliant being in the lead it least for 2.8 miles then the real runners came past me. we had some good Malvern Hills to get up but well worth it as the view was awesome, just as hard coming down, well marshalled plenty of encouragement a tee shirt and pleased with my time 1h 42m, looking forward to next year

Newtown Carnival 5K - 10th June
Report by Katy Ling
Friday night we went to Newtown to do a 5k it was a nice friendly race. I did this one two years ago,so when we started off once out of the park, I had a big surprise there there was this great big hill it knocked the wind out of me but the second time round I was ready for the so and so hill. I enjoyed it very much and was pleased with my time 42m looking forward to the next one of the series.

Severn Hospice Midnight Walk - 4th June
On June 4th just before midnight many ladies gathered at TCAT all in their pink T Shirts, some wore fancy dress, everyone keen to go, different fancy dresses helped to make it a good atmosphere. It was a lot better organized this year and a different route. The marshalls were great. It was nice to see Pauline Kesek. the start was from inside the sport's hall it took about ten minutes to get going . While on route we met a young lady who ran at our club on a Tuesday, I’ve forgotten her name it’s me age! We got back at TCAT about 1.45am, I wanted to go on to a nightclub but nobody seemed keen, I got home about 2.30 went to bed at 3am, got up at 6.30am to go off to the Morris Minors Rally at Shrewsbury where we had a special visitor, see photos.
I would do the walk again.

Harry Kelly Brownhouse Dash 5k - 1st June
Report by Linda Edmondson
After a couple of weeks hill walking in Scotland I thought I’d see if I had any fast-twitch muscles lurking by doing this race up near Rochdale. It’s an interesting trail race with a big climb at the start, bit of a descent, 2 laps of a reservoir and then back up and over the hill to the start. Having got there too late for a proper warm-up I just about got going for the last kilometre and finished in 27.10.

Liverbird Marathon Double - 30th & 31st May
Wrekin Road Runners three marathon maniacs Denzil Martin, Sarah and Jon Aston travelled to Liverpool on Monday to take part in the second running of the Liverbird Marathon Double. The event which comprises of two marathons over two days saw the Wrekin trio who have amassed over 200 marathons between them run alongside the River Mersey from Brunswick Dock in the City for 3.3 miles to Otterspool and back four times.
Although very flat the route followed a path of concrete slabs, cobbles and bricks which were all hard going on the feet and legs, which combined with a stiff head on, breeze on the return leg made for a tough run. Denzil and Jon completed both days whilst Sarah did the first day. To see pictures from this event click here

Shareshill 6k - 23rd May
Report by Kathy Ling
Jan & I popped up to a little village called Shareshill near Wolverhampton to do a 6+k, a cross country. We got there in plenty of time but had trouble finding the village hall, this was their first race to raise money for the village hall. The weather good and off we set along narrow roads then off across fields, along the canal and back into the high street. It was great fun and I even passed one or two (worryingly) A good time of 43 minutes and not forgetting a nice goodie bag and tea and cakes. I would do it again.

Race For Life 5k - 22 May
Report by Kathy Ling
I was not too happy about paying £14.99 entry fee then expected to raise more money. Sarah Hodgson, Jan Pugh and I with 3 other girls made up a team for Race for Life. The weather was very very cold with a 60 mph wind and we were cold before we started. Some people were late owing to the volume of traffic. We finally got going, the wind whipped the dust up and it was quite hard work. The time was not bad, 43 minutes and we had a pink goodie bag. I would not do it again.
Llandudno 10 mile - 22nd May

Wrekin College Spring Aquathon - 22 May 2011
Report by Pauline Kesek
Five Wrekin Road Runners took to the pool today for this local event. Steve Gill was due to take part, but owing to a recent tumble whilst training on The Wrekin, resulting in a broken finger, was unable to swim (any excuse!). However, he did come along to support us did Ian Emery. Thanks guys!
Jordan Stamp was the WRR star of the day taking 3rd place in his age group Tristar 3. This was for a 300m swim followed by a 3000m run.
Jason Harland took 4th place in the Senior Mens (age 17 +) age group. All adults, male and female, had a 400m swim followed by a 5k run. Jason had a fantastic swim in 7.29 mins and a strong run finishing in a time of 29mins.
Tony Nicholls was only just behind in 5th place. His time of 29.13 mins was particularly impressive since he didn’t notice the sign telling him he only had 2 lengths left of the 16 and was half way along his 17th length before he heard officials call him back! He then went to transition and was sent back to the changing rooms for his top – no topless running allowed (distracts the marshalls!!!) . Despite all of that, his run was actually 2nd fastest of the day! Anna Davies took part as a first timer, using the event as a training session for the London Triathlon which she has entered and is working hard to prepare for. She had an excellent swim and a good run given the extremely windy conditions finishing 6th in the Senior Ladies with a time of 36.36 mins. As for me (Pauline Kesek) maybe the less said the better! The swim was a PB, but still slowest lady and the run, which was going quite well, came to a disastrous end! I got confused with the laps at the end (well, I was the oldest!) and thought I had finished – the marshalls didn’t seem to notice which was a shame – whilst lying on the grass, recovering for a few mins, Steve kindly came and said I had another small lap to do!! By the time I had got up, started running (whilst feeling rather silly), my finishing time of 42.18 mins made me the last in category. I am delighted to report that one male competitor was slower!
I think it is fair to say on behalf of all those who took part, this was a fun event and, to quote Kathy, YES – we would do it again! Maybe with a few more WRR joining in!!
Leaden Boot Challenge - 22nd May
Report by Sarah Aston
This event was shorter than the previous days but no less challenging with over 4,000 feet on ascent but it was worth it for the fantastic views. It was again very well organised with excellent instructions and very friendly marshalls, with a hot meal at the end of potato gratin- my favourite- and an amazing array of cakes. It was so difficult to make a choice so I ended up sharing 2 with Jon who had driven round the course to support. My time was 6:37. For photos click here Ross Weston also took part in the event and will hopefully be providing some more photos!
Sandstone Trail Challenge - 21st May
Report by Sarah Aston
This event had been revived by Helsby Running Club and involved us driving to Frodsham (5am start from home!) to be taken to Whitchurch by coach, (which we had passed an hour earlier) and then run the 33 mile length of the Sandstone trail back to Frodsham. It was a very well organised event with friendly marshalls and well stocked checkpoints. After a few short but steep climbs with great views we were back in Frodsham and treated to pie and peas, hot drinks and abundant cakes- we would definitely do this again! We finished the event in 7:19. For photos click here

Sheriffhales Shuffle 7 miles - 15th May
Report by Kathy Ling
It started off with a very cold wind, the course was slightly different, about 131 were waiting for the race to start and had to put up with the lovely smell of cooked food. We seemed to run on a lot more fields which was nice and came across a newly fruit planted orchard and the usual farm smells, Sarah stayed with me and when we reached Lilleshall we picked up some young fans so by the time we reached 5 miles I looked like the Pied Piper of Sheriffhales. It was nice to meet Alan Palin who had a good run, Jan Pugh also enjoyed the fun run 12m5s.
I loved the race and would do it again, nice medal and not forgetting the cakes.

Clun Valley Challenge - 14th May
This was an exceptionally well catered race as it was sponsored by several food companies including Tesco, Rocks Organic drinks and Tyrells crisps. There was a choice of 16 or 26 miles around the beautiful South Shropshire countryside with some challenging climbs, highly recommended for anyone who fancies this one next year, the 3 participants would do it again. (stole that one from Kathy Ling!)
16 miles Ross Weston
26 miles Jon & Sarah Aston in around 6 hours 50, had to estimate time as Sarah forgot to turn her garmin on at the start and Jon fell over (again!) and accidentally stopped his garmin.
European Non-Stadia Championships 13th May
The European Veterans road championships took place this year in Thionville which is in Eastern France near the borders with Luxembourg and Germany. Two Wrekin Road Runners - myself and Mark Dalkins – went out there to compete in the 10k event on Friday the 13th June. Due to shortage of accommodation at the venue we had both decided to stay in Luxembourg and travel in on the day. This unfortunately caused problems for Mark who, being new to this sort of event, had not allowed enough time to register and missed his race! I had better luck and finished as third Brit in the M60 category in a time of 40.28. It turned out that Great Britain were the third placed team in this age group (behind Germany and Russia) so I ended up with a bronze medal for my efforts! The cross country relay took place the following day. This time Mark did get to run, giving the M40 GB team a handy lead on the first leg. However the rest of the team was unable to maintain this position and finished a frustrating fourth. I also finished out the medals this time as the Italians had an ace up their sleeves in the form of a former Olympic runner who stormed through to relegate us to another fourth place!

Kingsbury Clasic 10k - 10th May
Report by Kathy Ling
After fighting our way through the 5 mile traffic jam at Brown Hills with one minute to go I managed to get to the starting line.
After the thunder storms the sun came out and made for a lovely evening for running two laps around the Kingsbury water park
with hidden hills, the ground was nice and soft but very warm. I did manage to get in before dark, the marshalls were great.
A nice medal and very pleased with my time, a PB for that race 1h 25m. I loved it and would do it again.

Llanghynhafal Fell Race - 7th May
Report by Linda Edmondson
Kath wasn’t the only one with a bad race experience on 7th May. I went to do Llanghynhafal Fell Race (4.5 miles 1700 ft up Moel Famau via a rocky gully) – and it wasn’t so much the wheels came off as that they were never there. Got round in last place in 74 minutes, but at least the sweepers didn’t crowd me!
Market Drayton 10k - 8th May
This event went ahead this year despite Muller pulling out of the organisation and a hole opening up in the road just days before the race requiring a last minute course change! The rain held off but the overnight wind had blown away the registration marquee so the race was delayed a few minutes to ensure everyone had their numbers and chips. Well done to all the Wrekin Road Runners who ran (and to those who marshalled who were delighted to receive a goody bag!) Yogurts were not in short supply as Muller provided them to all finishers.

Hawkshead Trail race 15k - 7th May
Report by Kathy Ling
This race had a challenge, which started at 1pm and I entered the wrong the race but did not know
until it was too late, however not one to give in I started the trail race at 2pm.
Right away I knew I was in for it when suddenly everybody disappeared up the road like lightning,
well I just plodded along. The first 4k was very hard climbing, soon after I managed to get into some
rhythm ,when I reached 7k which was half way and near a place called Coffin Ridge this man on a bike came out from nowhere and said to me I was too slow and would never make it before the marshalls went home.
I was advised to turn round and go back the way I came up, this I did but it was just as hard coming down
the mountain was slippy because of the rain but I managed to get back in one piece.
It was a funny time for me as I did do the 15k but different to everyone else’s time -3h 15m
I would love to do it again but would make sure I entered the right one because the challenge runners are allowed 4h 30m so look out. We had a very good goodie bag and a good T shirt.
Today Sunday I ran the Market Drayton 10k and felt great and had another goodie bag

Haughmond Hill Handicap (approx 9 miles) - 1st May
This race is a handicap event with those predicted with the slowest finishing times based upon previous years times or recent 10K and half marathon results starting first and the fastest last. If everyone finished as predicted all runners should cross the line at the same time. The following race report comes from Kathy Ling
Once again the Haughmond Hill 9m was here again. I started off in my usual place at 10 48 am the weather was warming up and was very dry and hard under foot but still very enjoyable, it was very nice to see some of the Wrekin Road Runners club members.
The one and only Paul ward who just popped in at the last minute and just left us standing once again coming in 1st. When he passed me it looked as if he was just out for a stroll. The three girls Caroline Princep-Beresford, Beverly McCarthy and Fiona Peel and not forgetting my mentor Ross Weston.all had a good run. At the presentation I was given a bottle of wine for being first o/65. The Race Director Colin Williams said next year they are going to give me the number 1 and start me off the night before to see if I would come in first however I did have two offers from two young men to keep an eye on me so watch this space..... I would do it again.

Manx Mountain Marathon - 23rd April
Report by Linda Edmonson
I did the Manx Mountain Marathon (32 miles 8000 feet of ascent and descent) on Saturday 23rd April. There was rain and low cloud on the highest tops and I had 3 navigational slip ups, but kept going reasonably OK and finished in 8:33:51 which was 15 mins faster than 2 years ago despite the course having been lengthened by ½ a mile with the last 300 metres on the beach.

Enigma Good Friday Marathon - 22nd April
Sarah and Jon Aston returned to Caldecott Lake in Milton Keynes for another marathon on what must be the hottest day of year so far. Highlight of the day was seeing their running friend Paul Barton of the Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers complete his 100th Marathon.

Cholmondeley Run - 17th April
Report By Kathy Ling
Jan and I traveled up to Cholmondeley Castle on a lovely warm sunny day. Before the start we had the High Sheriff the Mayor and Mayoress of Chester to wish us good luck. The Mayor started the race. We ran through the Chinese gardens around a magnificent Castle through fields and not forgetting the big hill with a fantastic view. Half way round weather was warming up, there were plenty of water stations and marshals. I found the ground very hard due to lack of rain even when running through the woods. I finished in 1:33:00
Jan had a very good run in the 2.5m time 24.18
I enjoyed the run and would do it again

Virgin London Marathon - 17th April
Probably a record number of nine Wrekin Road Runners took to the streets of our capital city on a warm morning to enjoy the carnival that is the London Marathon. Regular club members were joined by Canadian club members Steve & Marie Miller. Steve finished first of the Wrekin contingent with a fantastic sub 3 hour time, Marie sadly had to retire from the race. In crossing the line five club members completed a combined total of 16 marathons between them in the month of April, including Pino, Denzil and Dave who completed the first part of the Phoenix Challenge which saw them complete three marathons in three weeks, next month they take on the three peaks challenge and then they will run the length Hadrian’s Wall in three days you can sponsor them by clicking here

Report from Ian Emery
As the London Marathon drew closer a late decision was made to travel to London by myself, Paul Williams and the late Pat Adam’s eldest daughter Kate, to support our club members. It was a record entry for Wrekin which included two of our honorary members Steve Miller and Marie Elliot who now reside in Burlington-Ontario-Canada, Marie being a native of the country. For us we created our own marathon, I calculated from the time I got out of bed Saturday morning until I got back into bed early Monday morning I’d been either on my legs standing/watching, walking, spent 9 hours on a National Express bus for a total of 39 hours of which I don’t think I got more than 3 hours sleep, I think I would have felt better doing the marathon? Apart from travelling to airports in London I don’t think I’ve spent a full day or weekend in London since I participated in the 1984 marathon as an overseas runner and crossed the finish line in 3.18.01, no chip times in those days, todays time would be more like 33.18.00, I now live on memories only.
Having arrived at Victoria bus station at 6.30am, the other 2 guys took a Macy-Dee’s early breakfast, I’d brought enough sandwiches and cider to last a week, we then travelled to Tower Bridge via the underground, selected our viewing vantage point on Tower Bridge right under the 20k mark where we hung the Wreckers flag and waved at the cameras by 9am, good job we did because within an hour it was four deep and you daren’t leave your place to go to the loo otherwise you would never get back in. Having watched the wheelchair race and the elite women, we patiently waited for our first runner in the main race, Steve Miller crossed the 20k in exactly 71.30 hoping to achieve 2.40, next was Marie 10 minutes behind Steve. We then spotted Matt with earphones in jumping up at the cameras, he was oblivious to us shouting at him, we missed Denzil, Dave and Pino, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack, suddenly as we were about to make our way to the finish line at 11.45 Jon and Sarah popped up right in front of us,stopped for a quick chat and a photo session! Kate was particularly touched as they were running for Macmillan cancer charity and had photos pinned on their backs of her late mother, nice touch both and well appreciated as that was pat’s last marathon in 2008.
We then rushed off to the nearest toilets and if we find any handy the River Thames was the second option. Finally we arrived at the finish area where we only had an hour with Steve and Marie before they returned to Darlington. Both of them were tired at the 20 mile mark as the heat took it’s toll, Marie sadly retired at 18 miles, she had hoped to break the 3 hour barrier, another day maybe?. We said our goodbyes and went to meet the rest of out motley crew for a few libations at a pre-arranged pub in Trafalgar Square, this carried on until 5.30, when we left to frequent another pub where Paul’s first claim club meet, must be a runners thing!. We spent another hour talking to Paul’s friends before we made our way back to Victoria station.
We really enjoyed the day out, and I hope the Wreckers did.

Sticky Toffee Pudding 10K M/T - 2 April
Report by Kathy Ling
John and I travelled up to Cartmel in the Lakelands, the weather was awful and just as bad on Saurday morning. After breakfast we went down to Cartmel to book in and collect my number. All of a sudden there was blue sky and the sun came out. The race started on the race course at Cartmel and off we went along the race track and started to ascend up the hills, this year we could see for miles and miles after coming down the first hill this where we got a free makeover through mud and water up to my knees it was very very sticky but I hung on and got through it. Halfway round we were given Kendal mint cake- very nice, by now the weather was really warming up and finally through a lovely wood and down back on to the track to the finish where I picked up my sticky toffee pudding yummy yummy.
I felt great and really enjoyed the race and would it again.

The Orient Express V The Lilleshall Monumental 10K
Report by Kathy Ling
Saturday was a fantastic day for John and myself, we were treated by our daughter to a trip on the Orient-Express train from Crewe to Bath and back to Crewe We did nothing but eat and drink champagne everything was first class. I was not too sure what state my body would be in for Sunday’s race??
Sunday morning was cold and dull; I was raring to get going the race had 137 entries. it was nice to see Ross and Pam Weston, Alan Pain had a good run Off we went around the field then on to the rough lanes, crossing fields over styles, hills and woods where a marshal was showing off his White Y fronts which course a laugh, and finally the monumental hill which was a lot easier than I thought, then down back in the cricket field to be given a great goodie bag. I love the race and would do it again.

The Pig Hash - 19th March
Jan and i went up to village called Astbury 0n the way to Congleton. This 5.5mile Hash had everything. The weather was fantastic with blue sky and only one cloud in the sky, after wandering around the little narrow lanes we found the pub The Horseshoe Inn where we all meet for our Pig hash run We were called for a photo with Bryan Dale he got his camera but no batteries in so that was that.
At last we were off trying to find clues [white flour] after crossing two fields we managed to get on the right route, we crossed styles, through boggy fields and right through a farm yard with goats hens pigs etc great fun
and then the hard work started climbing up very steep hills but once at the top the view was awesome you could see for miles, we were then enjoyed chocolate biscuits on top of the hill, going down was just as hard
after a nice jog through the woods where the bluebells were trying to come through and a quick encounter with a very chubby young bull we keep going on over nice little bridges untill we reach the road back to the Horseshoe pub.We enjoyed chip butties. I had to down 1/2 shandy as a penalty because iIhad problems getting my leg over [ the styles] Jan was very good helping to find the clues
Its one of the hardest hashed I’ve done but both Jan and I really enjoyed it. I would do it again.
