Wrekin Barrel race
Despite Sundays torrential rain, 9 full teams of runners were to be seen huddling under a large marquee in the middle of a field at the bottom of the Wrekin. Now this by itself may seem a very odd thing (it certainly did to the runners) but it get stranger. not only were they in the middle of a field huddling under a marquee, they were preparing to run up one of Shropshire’s land mark hills with a 9 gallon barrel weighing in excess of 100lB. The barrel race is split into four categories the classic category which carries a full barrel up to havens gate, the women’s race which carries an empty barrel, the lunatic race where and individual carries a full barrel and the fun challenge were a team of four men/women/mixed carry an empty barrel. This years winners were yet again the Cock Hotel Hobson’s Harriers retaining there title for a seventh year, with a staggering time of 23:20. Setting a new record for the women’s race were the Flying Falcons with a time of 19:16. four teams with Wrekin Road Runners members took part. The Wrekin giants with a time of 30:01 and Amee and the beer bellies in 24:07.
Paris Marathon – 2020.
Four members of Wrekin Road Runners travelled to Europe last weekend to compete in the Paris Marathon. John and Sarah Aston, Wendy Searle and Anthony Nicholls ran the 31st annual 26.2 mile event, around the beautiful streets of the City. The route started at the L’Arc de Triomphe taking in such sights as the Champs Elysees, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.
John has completed several marathons including London and New York, but as Paris was his wife’s first marathon he chose to run it with her, both crossing the line in 4h 32m despite soaring temperatures that reached 30 degrees by 10:45.
Tony finished in his target time a personal best of 2h 59m. He was thankful to the official pacemakers who kept him on target. Wendy, whose Father also ran in the marathon finished in 4h 43m.
